He tried to win the heart of Sophie Monk but now former Bachelorette contestant James Trethewie has his sights set on a new reality TV co-star.

Ahead of his appearance in the new series of Ten’s Bachelor In Paradise, the 33-year-old said he was keen on Shannon Baff from last year’s season starring Nick “The Honey Badger” Cummins.

Sophie acknowledged James was a nice guy but said she needed some “quirky”.

“I assumed there would be a few people from Nick’s season going into paradise,” Trethewie, a Sydney financial adviser, said.

“I thought Shannon was pretty cute. She was the main person I was hoping would be in there.”

Baff, 25, was a fan favourite but the car care consultant failed to make it to the top three.

It could be fate for both of them, as Trethewie was originally invited to be a part of the first Bachelor in Paradise season that aired last year but he had just begun a relationship.

“They approached me for the first season of Paradise but I’d just met someone and it wasn’t a good time,” he said.

“The opportunity came up again and I was still single so I thought ‘why not give it another go?’

“Do you want to look back in life and have regret? Or do you want to say ‘I’ve given everything a go’?”

Trethewie could not reveal whether he found love on the island, teasing that interested parties would have to wait and see.

One thing is certain; Trewethie was not interested in “mean girls” Cat Henesey-Smith and Alisha Aitken-Radburn when entering paradise.

They made up two of the three women on Honey Badger’s season who had jaws hitting the floor with their bullying, to the point where many media outlets refused to do customary post-elimination interviews.

“I’d obviously watched Nick’s season and had seen the stuff with the mean girls,” he said.

“I was worried that they would be in there for drama. I just wanted a peaceful time.”

Bachelor in Paradise does not yet have an air date but promotional clips have begun airing, meaning the date won’t be far off.
