IN his famous hit Aloe Blacc sings about being ‘’the man’’, but the Grammy-nominated singer truly believes our culture is too male-dominated.
The 39-year-old American singer-songwriter, best known for his chart-topping hit I Need A Dollar, says men often receive more praise than women and has filtered this concept into his music.

“Our culture is so male-driven and so male-dominated and all the guys get all the accolades for everything but none of it happens without support, and sometimes none of it happens without the direct engagement of the women who make things happen,” he told Confidential.
Speaking of his upcoming Christmas album named Christmas Funk, Blacc said: “There’s a song that I wrote that’s called The Mrs Saved Christmas and I wrote this because I feel like Santa Claus gets all of the attention but nobody does anything by themselves.”
The international chart-topper is married to a Mexican-born Australian-raised singer, Maya Jupiter, and the couple have two children, a two-year-old son Satya and five-year-old daughter Mandela.
Making at least two trips with his family Down Under each year, Blacc was in town over the weekend to perform at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games.
The Man singer will be back early next year, performing at the Taronga At Twilight summer concert series alongside other major artists including the Hoodoo Gurus, The Whitlams, Xavier Rudd, James Morrison and Vera Blue.
With proceeds from the event going towards Taronga’s ongoing conservation and research work, Blacc is proud to be part of the initiative.
“I’m really excited. I love, first of all, playing live to almost any kind of audience, but when you can put together great music, a great audience with a great cause, it really makes everything so much more worthwhile,” he said.
Taronga At Twilight, presented by American Express, kicks off on February 1, with Blacc’s appearance set for February 21.
