Real Housewives of Sydney star Caroline Gaultier believes Australians should hold off going under the knife until they are comfortable within themselves.
Gaultier’s comments come after one of Australia’s most in demand cosmetic doctors warned women in their 20s to steer clear of plastic surgery procedures.
“I just think you need to actually establish your self esteem and then you can move forward,” Gaulter, star of the hit BINGE series, told The Daily Telegraph.
“I also think that plastic surgery is for when you get a bit older and you’re trying to swing backwards.”
Gaultier commented after Dr Amy Chahal, founder of The Centre for Medical Aesthetics in Surry Hills, warned of normalising invasive procedures for self-conscious teenagers struggling with low confidence and anxiety.
Recent research from the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery and Medicine found Millenials were having more surgery than any other generation.
And the University of South Australia found a concerning 16 per cent of Australian women aged 18 to 29 have already undergone cosmetic surgery.
Mother of two Gaultier is open about the ‘work’ she has had done over the years, including breast augmentation. She warned however that young adults need to be careful not to be flippant with such decisions that can be for life.
“You will stuff your face (otherwise),” she said. “Especially with stuff like fillers – a lot of people don’t know but these young girls are injecting fillers into their face and it doesn’t disappear, it just absorbs into your tissue and as you get older it wears your tissue down and ages you a lot faster than you would normally.”
Gaultier also suggested people not take up new technologies or plastic surgery procedures too quickly.
“You’ve got to wait at least five years when something new comes out to see what the real repercussions are,” she said.
As to her own work, Gaultier added: “I am all about maintaining the best version of yourself. I don’t believe in changing yourself but maintaining yourself, there is a difference, and I feel like a lot of young girls are made to feel like they are not good enough, and they have got to look a certain way. That is a dangerous arena to play in.”
Episode three of Real Housewives of Sydney drops at noon Tuesday on BINGE.
