She is tipped as a breakout star in the next big TV series, but that doesn’t stop singer and actor Emalia refreshingly telling it like it is, detailing the brutal reality of the often ruthless showbusiness industry.

Sophie Monk's emotional Bardot confession

Relative newcomer Emalia is not afraid to shine a light on the good and the bad of the entertainment industry.

Tipped as a breakout star of new TV drama, Paper Dolls, and with a new single – Stacks – out now, the singer and actor refreshingly tells it like it is.

“From the outside, fame can look so shiny and nice and appealing but there can be a lot of abuse of power,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“A lot of that is hidden and people don’t necessarily get to see how it affects the artists that are going through it.”

Emalia, who goes purely by her first name, was born in Bowral and grew up around Wollongong.

The 26-year-old is now based in Sydney, where she shot Paper Dolls that will premiere on Paramount+ on Sunday.

Also starring Miah Madden, Courtney Monsma, Naomi Sequeira and Courtney Clarke, it will tell the story of a fictional girl group named Harlow from the early 2000s.

Paper Dolls is executive produced by former Bardot singer Belinda Chapple and is based loosely on the rise and fall of the Aussie pop group that had a huge hit with Poison and launched the career of Sophie Monk.

“We have a long way to go,” Emalia said of the industry changes she’s witnessed. “It was super important and special for me to be able to shine a light on that throughout the show. We do look at things that are very real, things that have happened to people I know and people I have been around and even elements of it that I have experienced myself. It was very raw and we really had to go to some deep places to get there.”

Emalia, who plays Harlow group member Izzy James in the series, cried when she first read the script.

“I just knew I had to be a part of it,” she said, adding when asked her advice for others wanting to follow in her footsteps: “Make sure you are passionate about it, that it is what you really want to do, develop a thick skin. A good piece of advice I received was to subject yourself to rejection and failure and come out the other side because the more you go through it, the stronger you become. And make sure you have people around you that you know you can trust because there are a lot of sharks in this industry and it can be very tumultuous so having a strong support network is important.”
