Media Watch host Paul Barry’s replacement has been revealed as the ABC host takes extended leave following a road accident.
ABC journalist Jeremy Fernandez will fill in for Barry on Monday night as producers scramble to find a replacement.
“We are pleased to announce that Jeremy Fernandez will be presenting Media Watch this week while we find a longer term fill in. It looks like Paul Barry will be off for around four weeks. Thanks for all the kind and supportive words we have received for him. #MediaWatch,” the show’s Twitter page announced on Sunday.
Malaysian-born Fernandez worked as a producer for CNN International in London before joining the ABC in Sydney in 2009.
He previously hosted the morning edition of ABC News and has also worked as a voice-over artist with Channel 7.
It comes after Barry, 69, was rushed to hospital in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs last week after being hit by a car on his way to work.
The TV presenter was riding his bike to work when the collision occurred and he sustained several injuries including a shattered pelvis which has left him unable to walk.
He is currently on the mend at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick.
“Sorry. No @ABCmediawatch for me this week. Broken hand and pelvis after a thoughtless driver backed into the road without looking and cleaned me up on my bike as I rode to work. Not sure when I’ll be good to go again. Soon, I hope,” he wrote.
