Instagram model sledges packaging around her free loot but happy to use plastic straws

An Instagram ‘influencer’ has slammed companies sending her free loot wrapped in plastic packaging, but her eco credentials took a hit just hours later when she posted a snap that showed her sipping a cocktail through a plastic straw.

Sydney Instagram influencer Jade Tuncdoruk's Christmas message

Model and “influencer” Jadé Tuncdorukhas lashed out at the companies that send her free products, claiming the amount of unnecessary packing she is forced to throw out every week is “upsetting”.

In a post uploaded to Instagram, Tuncdoruk says: “Can brands and PR companies pleas (sic) start taking more initiative with the send outs … the amount of plastic I have to throw out weekly is ridiculous. If you need to fill a box or package to stop something from being damaged, use recycled materials. It’s just becoming upsetting.”

But despite appealing for brands to help preserve the environment, only hours later Tuncdoruk uploaded a video of herself drinking through a plastic straw.

Plastic straws have been banned in some venues across Sydney, including Bennelong, Opera Bar, Opera Kitchen and Portside Sydney, due to the environmental havoc they wreak.

Tuncdoruk wrote online that she was using a straw because she “was at an event with red lipstick on … I’m sure a lot of people can relate to how messy that can be”.

When we contacted her, the 24-year-old declined to answer questions about whether she was worried her initial post would affect her relationship with potential employers.

Tuncdoruk has 349,000 followers on Instagram and uses her platform to make money, promoting items such as clothing, cars, holiday destinations, beauty products and even candles.

Public relations guru Bruce Pollock says influencers should be wary of biting the hand that feeds them.

“Thank the people sending them to you for considering you’re somebody of stature who would be getting a gift,” he said. “Just be grateful.”

The rant comes in the same week that top chefs Matt Moran, Justin Hemmes and Maurice Terzini announced they had cut off freebie- hunting influencers.

“They have a few thousand followers then they hit you up for free food,” Moran said. “But I always enjoy watching the bill go out to the table.”

Tuncdoruk also made headlines last Christmas when she warned followers they wouldn’t be seeing much of her because it was a busy time for influencers.
