How to get into popular Sydney restaurant, Firedoor

A popular Surry Hills restaurant has a three month wait for tables - but there is a way you can sneak inside.

Behind the scenes with Lennox Hastie

Firedoor in Surry Hills is one of Sydney’s most booked out restaurants.

Run and owned by chef Lennox Hastie, all the food is cooked over wood coals and the restaurant was featured in the renowned Netflix series Chef’s Table.

Currently reservations for Firedoor are released on a monthly basis, three months in advance. But there is a way to sneak around the back. However it will cost you.

To celebrate American Express Delicious Mouth Out, Hastie is offering an intimate masterclass and dining experience, complete with food and premium drink pairings, on Sunday May 29 for $695 per seat!

“For our usual service, we are so busy so this is my chance to really be 1:1 and to take people behind the scenes,” Hastie said.

The top chef said he feels a huge responsibility when it comes to cooking for people who come through Firedoor.

“There is a lot of choice these days and a lot of ways people can spend their money. We want to give people an experience and connect with people and what better place to do that than over a fire pit.”

But if that price tag is not suitable, Hastie is offering another way to try his food by opening a Basque-inspired wine bar, Gilda’s, later in the year.

Hastie spent five years living in the region from Spain and was inspired by the regions connection to food.

The venue is close to the original restaurant and with half the venue being left open for walk-ins, it’s another way for people to get a taste of the Firedoor experience.

“It’s about adding another string to my bow. We’ve definitely sent people to neighbourhood bars in the area before they come to Firedoor, so we thought why not open our own,” Hastie said.

“It’s one of those places people can go to before Firedoor. Or just pop in for a drink, then stay for another.”
