From Kings Cross to Brighton-Le-Sands: The best new Greek restaurants in Sydney

For those who can’t travel in search of sunny skies this winter, a host of new Greek bars and restaurants are giving Sydneysiders a taste of the Mediterranean closer to home.

5 most underrated Greek islands

Expect Sydney to clear out in the coming months as socialites and celebrities can once again spam us with their pictures of a European summer.

However for those who won’t be travelling to the Greek Islands, there has been a host of new bars and restaurants that have opened up with a Mediterranean theme.

A Greek inspire lounge bar, Eros, has opened up on the Bayswater Road in Kings Cross. After lockout laws and lockdowns, that stripe of the cross is coming back to life and Eros has taken the space of the iconic Kings Cross institution The Bayswater Brasserie.

Here Sydneysiders can enjoy a Mykonos-style lounge bar with bottle service, a traditional meze plate and a personal lamb spit at your table.

Chef Murat Ekinci said post pandemic, patrons are looking to combine food with an experience.

“People want a fun vibe feel and no one does that better than the Greeks,” he said.

“So many people haven’t travelled in the past two years and we have a lot of clientele commenting that “It’s like stepping into Mykonos.”

The restaurant is fully booked on the weekends. “It’s good to see the Cross coming back to life,” said Ekinci.

In Bondi, Topikos Bar and Dining Room opened before the long weekends. The venue is lead by culinary director Joel Bickford (ex Aria) and is managed by Nick Ingall, who used to work at Potts Point Greek dining institution The Apollo.

Topikos will now go head to head with Bondi’s Ikaria, which has become an influencer hotspot thanks to its Instagram worthy interiors.

Meanwhile, the Southern suburbs of Carss Park and Brighton-Le-Sands will play host to the upcoming Greek festivals in May, where they will feature Greek food stalls and music.

Also in Brighton-Le-Sands, iconic restaurant Meet The Greek has relaunched after undoing major renovations. The restaurant is a warm and friendly environment that serves village-style food

Earlier this year, restaurateur Peter Conistis opened up alfresco, Greek-island inspired restaurant Ploos at Campbell Stores, the row of heritage-listed warehouses at The Rocks.
