Guy Sebastian has hit back at whispers involving how The Voice coaches critique wannabe singers on the hit reality show. Here’s what he said.

Guy Sebastian has set the record straight on reports suggesting coaches are told what to do and say on reality singing show The Voice.

The chart topping singer also shut down claims coaches are told when to turn their red chairs during blind auditions.

“We make a big effort to make the artists feel valued and to add to their artistry in a safe environment,” Sebastian wrote on Facebook.

“Even when artists don’t get a chair turn we make sure it’s a positive experience by giving feedback, or joining them onstage with a duet etc to make sure they don’t go home feeling like it was a failure. Click bait false headlines undermines that. I have never once been told who to turn my chair for.”

It is Sebastian’s third season as a coach on the hugely popular show, which has smashed the TV ratings with its revamped format and new home at Channel 7.

Joining him on the coaching panel are new team members Rita Ora, Jess Mauboy and Keith Urban.

A seemingly innocent interview published by Yahoo on Friday about new single Believer was lifted by numerous other media outlets with headlines claiming Sebastian said producers were told when to turn their chairs.

Commenting on a story posted on Facebook by online publication Tone Deaf, Sebastian said the “headline is completely false”.

The Tone Deaf headline read: “The Voice judge Guy Sebastian reveals producers tell them when to turn”.

“We are only given reminders of the different format changes for example this year there are unlimited chair turns instead of 12 spots which means if we are on the fence we don’t need to be selective,” he explained.

“Obviously it’s way better to give the artist a choice and to battle it out with another coach than to default to only one coach who turns.”
