With the women’s pro tour shutdown due to COVID, what is a young golfing protege to do?
Well, if you are top-ranked Aussie player Montana Strauss you sign up to Channel 7’s madcap new reality golf show Holey Moley — of course.
The 24-year-old former Melburnian, who recently fled strict COVID restrictions and headed to the Gold Coast, said she wasn’t sure what to expect when she submitted her application for the show while the was WPGA Australasian tour was on hold.
“I thought it would be, at the least, a bit of fun,” says Strauss, who has already been sighted in early promo clips of the show being flung to the ground by a giant windmill blade. (She wasn’t hurt, she says.)
“Getting girls interested in golf is not easy. It’s a hard sport to recruit to so I thought maybe this could be a way to shine a bit of a light on the sport and get a few more girls out playing.”
There was one other motivator, she admits. Grabbing the attention of some potential new sponsors.
“Golf is tough in that it is an expensive sport to play,” says Strauss, who currently has an apparel backer in Adidas Golf.
“I thought, maybe getting myself out there, you know, it might help increase my profile as well.”
Seven, which lifted the mini-golf-meets-Wipeout concept from the US, is also hoping Holey Moley can whip up some attention as they look to recover from some 2020 ratings bombs including Plate Of Origin, My Kitchen Rules and the Bevan Lee drama Between Two Worlds.
