Land next to Redland City’s animal pound has been turned into a reality TV haven, with construction of a golf-themed obstacle course for the hit show Holey Moley, expected to tee off next month.

The site, on South St near Redland Hospital, was chosen despite being deemed contaminated with buried dead animal carcasses.

It will become a hive of night-time activity with filming on the custom-built course scheduled to start after 6pm and run until 10.30pm.

Production company Eureka has already started advertising for on-set audiences with ticketing site Eventbrite this week calling for on-set audiences to meet at the Alexandra Hills Hotel on October 1 at 6pm.

A bus will take participants from the pub to the set for four hours of outdoor filming at the property, which the council holds in trust for the state government.

A bus, originally scheduled to pick up participants from the pub at 11pm, was rescheduled.

Redland council said filming would have to stick to conditions for regular events.

“That permit will ensure activities comply with environmental and regulatory standards including noise, dust and lighting levels, as well as appropriate controls around traffic management and security,” the council said.

The course, which has been kept a secret, is expected to include the popular regular features such as a dunking pool, tee-off ground, wacky jump-the-wiener, along with putt the plank and the punny dodge Uranus hole.

Eureka Productions, which has been commissioned by Seven Network to produce the show for Australian and international markets, said new holes were also being considered.

Australian versions of the series will be filmed this year but from next year, depending on COVID rules, the set will be available for international shows with teams from Germany, UK and France expected to fly crews and contestants.

The game will be based on the international Holey Moley format and will feature 96 contestants competing to win $100,000 on the world’s largest super-sized miniature golf obstacle course.

Some native trees were cleared to make way for the golf course on the eastern side of the site after assessments found very high levels of “contamination” on the side closer to the pound.

Redland City Council Animal Shelter, including administrative buildings, kennels and carparking will share the site.

Seven shifted production to Redlands after filming in the US failed in March following torrential rains and the spread of COVID-19.

Seven is expected to confirm full cast details soon but it is likely US comedian Rob Riggles and Australian golf legend Greg Norman will be involved.

HOLEY MOLEY WILL AIR ON SEVEN IN 2021.
