From Newtown to North Sydney, famed burger joint Mary’s is set to open it’s fifth location at Victoria Cross, the new building above North Sydney’s Metro Victoria Cross Station.
Founders Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham launched the original Mary’s on a small backstreet in Newtown in 2013.
Now they are the draw card in the $1.2 billion development which is set to open next year.
“It’s exciting to be part of something that’s so grandiose and a big picture of Sydney,” said Smyth.
“This is not a vision we drew when we opened up in a former STD clinic in Newtown. We just wanted to sweep our own floors rather than the floors of other owners. But we’re always looking for ways to find the limits of where the brand exists. The last thing we want is become one thing for one group of people. We don’t like to be bored or boring.”
The other retails announced at the new metro hub includes Marrickville Pork Roll, Crows Nest’s popular Only Coffee Project, Top Impressions Baker, Sushi Hub, DOPA, North Sandwiches, Machi Machi and of course, a McDonalds.
Smyth believes having both burger joints at the same complex speaks of the changing nature of Sydney.
“I can’t speak badly of McDonalds, it was my first and favourite job I’ve had. I still eat Maccas and on their good day, they rank top 5 burgers in the world,” says Smyth. “But it shows taste and expectations of customer base that when they have a better versions of things and they are willing to support it.”
The news come during a North Sydney food renaissance, with venues like Poetica, Loulou Bistro, Rafi and Glorietta opening up in the area in the last couple of years.
Sebastien Lutaud, director of culinary at Etymon Projects, who own Poetica and Loulou said “so much has changed in North Sydney over the past year and there’s still plenty of development and the Metro to open, so we’re really excited to be part of the growing restaurant and bar scene here.”
These venues at Victoria Cross are expected to open mid 2024. The new metro stop will see travellers get from North Sydney to Barangaroo in three minutes, and from North Sydney to Martin Place in five minutes.
