Wednesday night’s ambitious David Jones spring-summer fashion parade was as much about its new venue as it was about the bright and shiny new clothes.
More than 1500 celebrities, designers, VIP customers and media made their way to David Jones’ renovated Elizabeth St store for Bright Nights, celebrating the arrival of the spring-summer 2019 season.
As well as showcasing the upcoming season’s trends the event, attended by singer Jessica Mauboy, TV personality Lisa Wilkinson, former Miss Universe Australia contestants Francesca Hung and Laura Dundovic and shoe designer Terry Biviano, was all about flaunting the department store’s new womenswear floors, which have undergone a $200m redevelopment.
“This night is about the venue, our product and our customers,” DJs’ general manager — womenswear, footwear and accessories Bridget Veals said. “This is all about putting on a fun night for our customers and thanking our designers and our brands who have stayed on the journey with us.
“Planning has been going on for months. This is our big moment of our season launch. We have always celebrated it with a fashion launch over two nights and this time we are bringing it all together in one.”

Guests were treated to photo moment installations on every floor, including a set from DJ Beryl Streep and model Tom Derickx, and served oysters and champagne.
DJs’ ambassador Jessica Gomes and face of menswear Tom Derickx led 23 models on the five “roaming runways” over four floors, heralding the end of winter with summery styles.
Upcoming trends included bright and fluoro colours.
“It is all about bright colours,” Gomes said.
“Bright oranges and bright pinks and bright blues. And lots of bright florals from amazing Australian designer including Zimmermann, Aje and Camilla and Marc.
“We also showed our exclusive brands like Country Road, Mimco, Trenery.”
The runways featured 65 new womenswear brands including Toni Maticevski, Roksana, Tibi, CO Clothing, Colovos and Johanna Ortiz.
