Channel 10 responds to transgender Bachelorette casting rumours

Channel 10 has responded to claims the network has cast its first transgender Bachelorette.

Channel 10 made history last month by casting its first ever Indigenous and bisexual Bachelorette and it’s now been claimed that Sydney socialite, Mitch Greer, who is transgender, is being considered for the next season.

Greer attended the red carpet premiere of James Bond film No Time to Die at United Cinemas Opera Quays on Friday night where friends were overheard referring to her as “the next Bachelorette”, however, her rep denied casting rumours.

Mitch Greer, who is transgender, was recently rumoured to be joining The Bachelorette.

The show has been striving for more inclusive casting in recent years after previous criticism about the lack of diversity and while LGBTQ advocates have welcomed the idea of casting Greer on the dating show, a Channel 10 source said it’s still too early.

“[Production company] Warner Brothers hasn’t even started casting yet so there’s no truth to this at all,” the insider said.

Confidential has contacted Channel 10 for comment.

It comes as ratings for the latest season with Perth’s Brooke Blurton continue to flop after premiering to the franchise’s lowest ratings in history last month.

For the first time ever, producers cast both men and women as potential suitors for the proud Noongar-Yamatji woman but viewers have been tuning out in droves.

The show premiered to 397,000 metro viewers, which is significantly less than last year’s ratings disaster with sisters Elly and Becky Miles (628,000).

More recently, ratings plunged even further to a measly 253,000 across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Blurton recently dismissed ratings criticism and said she’s proud to be part of a TV show that welcomes representation and makes a positive impact on the world.

“I don’t take notice of people’s commentary about the show’s ratings because I think it’s so unnecessary,” she told Stellar.

“Yes, it’s an entertainment value but it’s also my life. And if people can’t see the gravity of what this show has achieved, then I think they need to wake up because it’s not all about ratings.

“It’s about representing communities where they haven’t been represented before. And it’s about showing young people that love is so undefined. I don’t really focus on [ratings] - it’s not my priority right now. My priority is my life.”
