Mystery surrounds Cassandra Thorburn’s reasons for denying that she gave an interview in which she said her ex-husband, newly wed Karl Stefanovic, is a “fake” and that he had “a lot to hide”.
Her comments, published on New Idea’s website yesterday, quoted Thorburn as saying “everything he (Stefanovic) says is about this fake person who lives in this fake castle”.
But on national television yesterday (Tuesday), the 47 year-old former journalist, was emphatic that she “did no interview with New Idea. There was no interview”.

However, Sydney Confidential has verified, irrefutably, that she did make the remarks at Sydney Airport after flying back from a weekend away while Karl celebrated his marriage to his new love, Jasmine Yarbrough, in a glitzy four day party in Mexico.
In addition to the irrefutable evidence, a source close to the journalist who did the interview, Jonathan Marshall, said that he sat with Cassandra in a coffee shop inside Sydney Airport where she made the claims.
Thorburn, who is mother to Karl’s three children, River, Ava and Jackson, also said: “He’s thrown three weddings for goodness sake. Who needs three weddings in a year, give us a break.”
“Three weddings and a funeral. We had a funeral and it was my dad’s.”
Thorburn first attempted to cast doubt over the validity of the story on Channel 10’s Studio 10 where she said: “I did no interview with New Idea. There was no interview”.
Later in the day, when approached by Confidential, she obliquely hinted she had had a conversation with the reporter when she wrote: “I did not do an interview with New Idea or an interview with the pap who claimed to be a journalist,” she said in an email.
“I am a happy and confident woman and mother of 3 children,” she added.
However, it is understood that during the conversation last Sunday Thorburn unleashed on more than Stefanovic and his wedding.
Although she denied doing an interview, when pressed by Confidential yesterday, Thorburn would not confirm or deny if she made any of the comments which were printed on the weekly magazine’s website.
Stefanovic and his new wife flew out of Mexico yesterday after their four day fiesta with their family and friends.
They will spend a few days in Los Angeles before heading to Aspen for a honeymoon.
