BFF Hollywood stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds named as co-owners of SailGP team

Confidential can reveal the team behind Australia’s SailGP team had to delay announcing its new co-owners as negative headlines surrounded the BFF Hollywood stars.

‘Insensitive’: Hugh Jackman called out for a post made after his divorce

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds’ sporting partnership has been a long time coming.

Confidential can reveal those behind the Australian SailGP team BONDS Flying Roos were set to announce the news the pair were its new co-owners in January, but were forced to put everything on hold as negative headlines surrounded the BFF Hollywood stars.

They would have been hoping for that negativity to abate, but alas that wasn’t to be, so the announcement happened anyway, and it is arguably the worst timing.

Jackman’s name was smeared in May when his ex-wife Deborra-Lee Furness filed for divorce after their 20-year-plus marriage. At the time she issued a scathing statement which noted the “betrayal” she had endured.

It was a stark contrast to their initial announcement which said they were splitting “with gratitude, love and kindness”.

Jackman, who has moved on with actor Sutton Foster, has been branded “insensitive” after sharing a gleeful social media post just hours after his ex-wife’s statement, of himself skipping rope on stage as part of his one-man stage show. The video had the solitary comment: “FINALLY”.

Many have wondered whether Jackman’s post was ill-timed or intentional.

Meanwhile Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively’s reputation is facing challenges related to the It Ends With Us controversy and a lawsuit by Justin Baldoni.

But as they say, the show must go on and with the Australian SailGP team competing in the New York Sail Grand Prix over coming days, they were forced to push ahead to announce Jackman, Reynolds and team driver and chief executive Tom Slingsby are now co-owners.

Likened to Formula One on water, SailGP pits 12 national crews in identical 50-foot foiling catamarans, ripping past 100km/h just metres from shore in the world’s most iconic harbours.

The trio were in talks as far back as last year and signed the deal ahead of the SailGP event in Sydney in February.

“This is an incredible milestone for us and for our sport,” Slingsby said.

“(Jackman and Reynolds) bring unmatched star power, a love for storytelling, and a sharp sense of humour that fits perfectly with our team.”
