It is the best Christmas present Matty Johnson and Laura Byrne could have hoped for.

After suffering a heartbreaking miscarriage earlier this year, the loved-up Bachelor couple are excited to tell friends and family they are 15 weeks pregnant with their first child.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to end the year,” Johnson told The Saturday Telegraph.

Johnson, 31, and Byrne, 32, captivated loyal Bachelor fans with their reality TV love story just over 18 months ago.

In June, they were surprised but happy to find out Byrne was pregnant but lost the baby at seven weeks.

Miraculously though, she fell pregnant within weeks of the tragedy with their baby due in June.

Now, to say the couple is excited is an understatement.

They are yet to decide whether or not to find out the sex of the child.

Johnson is keen but Byrne isn’t. “I am itching to find out,” he said.

“I am very impatient but people we have spoken to say that when they haven’t found out before it makes it even more special.”

They’re keen to get married one day but a shotgun wedding isn’t on the cards.

“It will happen,” Johnson said before Byrne added: “I have never been the type of girl to envisage my wedding day, or the dress, but I have definitely thought of myself as a mum.”

The couple is clearly ecstatic, with the morning sickness now calming for Byrne, who has endured some strange food cravings.

“Nectarines, Maggi and Fantastic Noodles, that is what I lived off for the first few weeks, and lime cordial. It is weird, it really does change the things you want to eat,” she said.

Given their devastating miscarriage, the couple has been careful sharing their baby news.

Ideally they would have kept the secret for longer but Byrne is starting to show.

“We’d heard so many stories about how it had been so difficult for some people and obviously we thought it was going to be difficult for me because of what had already happened,” explained Byrne, a jewellery designer with her own brand, ToniMay.

“When you’ve had a miscarriage, you worry if there is something wrong with you.

“It is not something that people really talk about but actually one in four pregnancies end that way, you just don’t hear about it.”

Byrne is eager to share her story only in the hope that it helps others going through similar experiences.

“I felt like I had no one that I could speak to about it at all and no one to tell me what was happening or what it was going to be like,” she said.

“It is definitely something that is very private but it is so common that it should be spoken about so when it does happen you don’t feel like there is something wrong with you.”

Johnson said he could never quite fathom how hard it was for a woman to cope with a miscarriage.

“What goes on in a woman’s body when she falls pregnant and then if she has a miscarriage, I can’t even fathom what it must be like managing those changes.

“You feel quite helpless.

“I am such a spectator to what is happening and to what Laura is going through.”

The loved-up couple have lived together in Bondi for several months, sharing their home with their three-legged pet dog, Buster.

Both have met their fair share of sceptics over their reality TV romance.

“As much as that is how we met, it is not what defines our relationship,” Byrne said.

Johnson added: “You could argue that it wasn’t a fairytale but what we went through is the reality of what so many people go through.”
