Australia’s most expensive cocktail: Dean and Nancy on 22’s Old Fashioned costs $15k and takes 48h to make

It’s pretty much liquid gold. Dean and Nancy on 22’s Old Fashioned takes 48 hours to make. The price might leave you needing another stiff drink.

A bar in Sydney is set to sell a special edition cocktail that costs $15,000.

Mixologist Stefano Filardi, from the award-winning Dean and Nancy on 22 has created Australia’s most expensive cocktail, the Woodford Reserve Gold Fashioned to mark Old Fashioned Week.

The cocktails cost comes from its rare ingredients including a gold wine dubbed “nectar of the gods.”

On sale for one week, the cocktail takes a minimum of 48 hours to prepare. It features Woodford’s Reserve XO Cognac, which in itself costs $3000. It’s finished with a gold infused Chateau d’Yquem reduction, handmade saffron and vanilla bitters. It’s served with specially-engraved ice and served in a French crystal Baccarat tumbler, which drinkers can take home.

All up, up to 80ml of the cocktail costs around the same amount as a Mitsubishi Mirage car.

Originally from Italy, Filardi has worked in the finest hotels in London and said it’s not uncommon to make cocktails worth $5000.

However making a drink that costs $15k in Sydney shows how much Sydney’s cocktail scene has developed.

“The past five years, Sydney’s cocktail scene has changed and grown significantly. There wouldn’t have been a market for this at one point,” he said. “It doesn’t happen often and it’s exciting to be part of.”

The rising cost of living might be a daily conversation for most of us, but not those willing to spend thousands on one drink.

“For people with this type of money, it’s the once in a lifetime experience of tasting a cocktail like this,” said Filardi.

“However, we like to think we offer that same once in a lifetime experience for people coming to us and spending $25 on a cocktail.”

Last year, socialite Christa Bilich introduced a diamond cocktail at her famous champagne bar at The Rocks which cost $4000.

In other expensive drink news, Double Bay has been revealed as the suburb in Australia that drinks the most champagne.

Endeavour Group compared the sales of the luxury French drink in over 1600 of their Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores, with the Dan Murphy’s in Double Bay coming out clearly on top followed by Willoughby.

The group found that champagne sales have been on the increase, with Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte being the fastest growing brand and seeing a 200 per cent growth in sales in NSW.

The champagne, which costs $52 a bottle, is often the house champagne in venues in France.
