Ordering an expensive bottle of Grange was once a way to show off your riches in a restaurant but now cocktails are becoming the new status symbol.

After the doom and gloom of the pandemic people are ready to party and they are spending big on cocktails priced from $100 up to $4000.

The Rocks cocktail bar Maybe Sammy, which won the best cocktail bar of the year, has seen a surge in customers buying their premium pours and vintage cocktails, which are priced between $65 and $150.

The bar’s co-founder, Martin Hudak, said for that price there were no gimmicks, just top shelf liquor.

“Maybe Sammy is inspired by the ’50s and ’60s. We take our guests back in time to when Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr drank cocktails. There are no gold flakes in the cocktail, it’s just a classic recipe that shows off the beauty of the spirit.

“It’s not the sickly sweet mix of the ’80s and ’90s, now people’s palates when it comes to cocktails are more refined.”

Socialite Christa Bilich will reintroduce a diamond cocktail at her champagne bar inside the famous Bilich Gallery at The Rocks.

Along with alcohol, the cocktail contains 24 carat gold flakes and a black diamond and costs the drinker $4000.

“Before this latest lockdown, we’d sold four of them,” Bilich said.

“I thought it would just be a fun idea but I didn’t expect people to buy it.”

New cocktail bar Frank Macs also has become known for its $100 Frank’s Last Drink.

The martini is made of Nolet Distillery Silver Vintage 1970s Carpano Dry Vermouth and is served in crystal and paired with Osteriia Caviar.
