From social media to the stage, British singer Sophie May is making waves across the globe.
Down Under for her Australian tour, the folk artist known for her song Lover Boy only began her music journey four years ago.
“I was so bad at writing songs, I was a bit lost until Covid when I had so much time like everybody else. I ended up posting little clips for about eight months, and they were all bad and nothing connected until one video really went crazy,” May told Confidential.
With over 30 million streams, the 25-year-old does not want to be confined to just one music style.
“Genres bend naturally anyway. I think it’s never good just to put yourself in a box most of the time, just because you will eventually break out of it, whether you like it or not, and I think it’s always good to keep an open mind. I think it’s just following whatever feels good,” she said.
May admits that her biggest challenge has been learning to trust the process.
“I feel like a hard challenge maybe is just perseverance when it comes to trusting that it’s a journey, especially with the online world, you might see that people are kind of overnight successes or make comparisons to other people.”
As her Australian tour comes to a wrap, the singer can’t get enough of her Aussie fans.
“I love Australians, I love their energy, it’s always so good. I played at the same venue last year as well, it was just amazing.”
