Sydney is fast becoming the Broadway and West End of Australia with yet another major international production set to debut in the harbour city in 2025.
The Sunday Telegraph can reveal award-winning stage show Back To The Future: The Musical will open at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in September.
Based on the original first film in the Hollywood franchise starring Michael J Fox as high school student Marty McFly, the show won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards in 2022.
The 1985 film, in which McFly time travelled in a DeLorean to 1955, was co-written by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale and received countless awards, including an Oscar.
Steven Spielberg was a producer on the film.
“To paraphrase Marty McFly, you guys are ready for this, and your kids are gonna love it (too)! If Bob Zemeckis and I time travelled back to 1980 and told our younger selves that the script they were struggling to write would become a West End and Broadway musical now making its way to Sydney, Australia 45 years later, they’d kick us out of their office and call us crazy,” Gale said.
“Well, sometimes, crazy ideas give birth to great entertainment, and now Bob and I are eager to share our musical vision with Sydney audiences.”
The news comes ahead of a bumper year for stage shows in Sydney with MJ The Musical on the way, along with Hadestown, Peter and the Starcatcher and more.
Titanique recently made its debut outside of the US in Sydney after winning critical acclaim off Broadway.
Back To The Future: The Musical will be produced in Australia by John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia and Colin Ingram for Colin Ingram Ltd, supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW.
A waitlist to be first in line for tickets is now open via backtothefuturemusical.com.au.
“Australian audiences are going to be blown away to see how this iconic story has been recreated for the stage,” Frost said.
“Whether a fan of the movies or not, this is a show for everyone, and I can guarantee that you will leave the theatre on an absolute high.”
Other shows coming to Sydney in 2025 include Guys & Dolls, Annie, The Book of Mormon and Rent The Musical.
