Influencer Sammy Robinson treads carefully online amid rise in cyberbullying

Veteran influencer Sammy Robinson opens up about how she deals with online trolls, and what her key priority is now.

How we chose the 30 under 30 Aussie influencers

Veteran influencer Sammy Robinson may have built her career by oversharing, but she’s become “careful” about what she posts 10 years later as cyberbullying continues to surge.

The 28-year-old started putting beauty content on YouTube when she was 18.

Now the chief executive of her own fashion label, One Mile, Robinson said her work and growing older had both made her less inclined to share personal insights with the world.

“(The internet) is a little bit of a scarier place,” Robinson told The Daily Telegraph before launching a new store in Paddington at the weekend.

“It’s high risk, high reward in the influencing world. We’ve seen a lot of people’s mental health suffer from it.

“There’s a lot of hate. There’s a lot of criticism that comes with it. So, I think naturally a lot of people are more inclined to be careful with what they share now, because you don’t want to live your life with that criticism daily.”

Robinson said social media had been “a beautiful and innocent world at the beginning”.

“There were always trolls, but it felt more like of a community of friends and there were so few people in the influencing industry at the time,” she said.

“I am almost lucky that I did overshare and was able to be a part of this industry for so long, because I’ve learned how to share what I want in a way that’s palatable to people, that isn’t going to offend people.”

Another reason for her reduced online presence is the time she spends leading the all-female time at One Mile.

“My business is my number one priority,” Robinson said.

“It’s my baby and I will protect it at all costs, and I will protect all my girls at all costs.”

Robinson also confirmed she was in a new relationship but was keeping it private — for now.

“Never say never. I may post him or I may not,” she said.

“It just depends on the mood and where we’re at.

“I’ve recently said until I know for a fact you’re going to be the one, I don’t think I’ll post them again.

“You don’t just post whoever anymore and I’m careful now because there is just too much scrutiny.”
