The latest round of NAPLAN results have revealed the top performing schools in Liverpool.

Years 5 and 7 students at St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox College scored an average of 585.5, nabbing first place in a comparison of 2019 high school results across the region.

It was closely followed by Amity College (584.5), William Carey Christian School (581), Al-Faisal College in Liverpool (576.7) and Green Valley Islamic College (572.8).

Deputy head of St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox College Deborah Grohala said the school’s success was down to the hard work of teaching staff, which translated to student excellence.

“The staff … go above and beyond here at the school and they’re very hard working,” she said.

Clancy Catholic College was one of the top performing schools in the region.

“I’ve been a teacher for over 25 years and they’re probably the hardest working staff I’ve come across.”

Ms Grohala said parents had high expectations for their children and the school focused on academic performance from junior years.

“There is an emphasis and focus on academic performance. Our subjects that are taught obviously align to the NSW syllabus and also the Australian curriculum but they’re quite comprehensive and students are engaged and thoroughly immersed in their academic development right from the word go.”

The NAPLAN test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.

The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, the federal body responsible for developing national curriculum and assessment, this year revamping the MySchool website where school’s NAPLAN results are publicly displayed.

Focus groups across the country found MySchool was difficult to navigate and was filled with technical language and jargon.

ACARA also had to further explain on the website the benefits of NAPLAN and MySchool to parents.
