Private schools dominated in the NAPLAN across Fairfield, with just two public schools among the region’s top 10 performers.

With an average primary score of 492.6 and 480.2 respectively, St Johns Park Public and Bonnyrigg Heights Public outshone other government schools to rank among the best performers in the region, according to the 2019 NAPLAN results.

Private schools made up the majority of the top five, with Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School taking out the number one spot with a score of 498.

It was followed by Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Primary School Mount Pritchard (495.7) in second place, John the Baptist Catholic Primary School (490.4) in fourth place and Marion Catholic Primary School (485.2) in fifth place.

Marion Catholic Primary School principal Therese Gaunt said its success was the result of a focus on the basics from kindergarten to Year 6.

“We have a focus on literacy and numeracy right through from K-6 with a lot of resources and effort put into our infant classes to make sure the children are grasping basic skills in the infant years,” Ms Gaunt said.

She said staff were dedicated to helping students realise their potential, adding parents played an important role.

“Teachers set high expectations for their students and for themselves as teachers to get the best out of every child.”

Ms Gaunt said the school’s NAPLAN results were “on the rise”.

“We’re probably in the best place we’ve been.”

The NAPLAN test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.

The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), the federal body responsible for developing national curriculum and assessment, this year revamping the MySchool website where school’s NAPLAN results are publicly displayed.

Focus groups across the country found MySchool was difficult to navigate and was filled with technical language and jargon.

ACARA also had to further explain on the website the benefits of NAPLAN and MySchool to parents.
