THE #MeToo phenonom has shaken the world — but if we’re ever to obtain true equality between the sexes, more men need to stand up, says Hollywood star Susan Sarandon.

The Oscar-winning star, who is in Australia to judge the 26th Tropfest short film festival, sat down with Daily Telegraph entertainment writer Jonathon Moran, to talk #MeToo.

“The first thing is having the conversation. It’s important to realise the imbalance of power exists because of an economic imbalance for women in every industry,” she told Moran on the Miranda Live online radio show.

“It’s juicer to look at the entertainment business — but it’s waitresses, it’s nannies, it’s every woman that needs to keep her job and has someone abusing power at the top.”

The 71-year-old actor, famous for her roles in Thelma & Louise, the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Dead Man Walking, is also a serious activist who has stood on the picket line protesting big oil and the Iraq War.

But Sarandon said everyone needed to take part in change.

“I’m raising sons that don’t feel entitled to take advantage of people — men or women — because of their powerful positions,” she said.

“I think we need to start, as mothers, to make sure we’re not only raising women who are strong, but raising sons who understand that to be vulnerable itself is a strength.

“We need male feminists — it’s very, very important.”

She compared the #MeToo push to the anti-gun backlash in the wake of yet another US shooting.

“We should be focused on the future,” she told Moran.

“We need to vote out all these people exposed, we need to vote them out.”
