TREASURER Scott Morrison said it was the decision of the National Party to find jobs for Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s lover Vikki Campion.
Speaking on Miranda Live, Mr Morrison said nobody was questioning whether Ms Campion was qualified for her high-paid government roles.
LISTEN TO SCOTT MORRISON’S INTERVIEW HERE:
“Nobody is saying that somebody was given a job that they didn’t have the skills or that it wasn’t merit based,” he told Devine.
But he said the National Party makes its own decisions in allocating staff and positions.
“They make decisions about how that is done. And I’m not aware of any issues arising from that,” he said.
The Daily Telegraph revealed last week that the government found two high-paid roles for Ms Campion after she left Mr Joyce’s office last year.
Mr Morrison said that the breakdown of Mr Joyce’s marriage “terrible” for his family.
“And all that rehashing of all of this, I don’t see how this assists them,” he said.
The Treasurer said the government had processes when dealing with misconduct of members or ministers and “would expect that to take their course where it is warranted”.
“As for Barnaby’s private conducts, well, it’s not for me to defend him on that,” he said.
“I think people know my views on these things. But I’m also very aware of human frailty.
Devine also spoke to former Trump adviser Seb Gorka about America’s newly appointed ambassador to Australia: decorated Navy Admiral and robust China critic Admiral Harry Harris.
