Slain ex-bikie Shane Ross owed money to bikie clubs, drug deals, court told

Slain ex-bikie Shane Ross owed millions of dollars to bikie clubs and major drug dealers and was due to deliver on a plan to bring 5kg of ice from Sydney to the Gold Coast every week on the day he was gunned down, a court has heard.

Major breakthrough in murder investigation of bikie Shane Bowden

Slain ex-bikie Shane Ross reportedly owed millions of dollars to “pretty much every single bikie club in the country” as well as major drug dealers, his friend and fellow drug dealer has told the court.

Joshua Munn was giving evidence at the committal hearing of three alleged Lone Wolf bikies – Garry Brush, Nathan Miller and Brodie Singh – charged with murdering Ross and his Monstr Clothing business partner Cameron Martin, who were gunned down in a Tallebudgera park in October 2019.

Munn told the court that Ross had struck a deal to bring 5kg of the drug ice from Sydney to the Gold Coast every week and was due to do the first deal on the day he was murdered.

He said Ross owed him $75,000, including $5000 for a tombstone he had made for Ross’s mother.

Munn said after Ross was shot dead, he heard from “various people” that the ex-Lone Wolf and Comanchero bikie owed “a lot of money to a lot of people … (including) pretty much every single bikie club in the country”.

The court heard “serious criminals” in Sydney were after Munn because Ross had lied to them over a drug deal.

Ross had told the criminals he had given Munn $50,000 worth of drugs when he hadn’t, the court was told.

Munn said men with guns had turned up at his house and punched him in the head.

He also admitted to having lied to police about the drug dealing he and Ross were involved in because he didn’t want to implicate himself.

The court heard Ross had a $500,000 contract on his head.

Singh’s barrister, Saul Holt QC, asked Munn if he was involved in the murders.

“No, absolutely not,” Munn replied.

Under cross-examination by Brush’s barrister Angus Edwards, Munn admitted he had lied in court and to the police “over and over again”.

Mr Edwards asked Munn where he was around the time that Ross and Martin were killed.

“I was at home with my wife and kids,” he said.

Mr Edwards suggested Munn was “out driving around somewhere with somebody”.

Munn said he had earlier been driving around with a mate to get his computer fixed.

He said Ross had a “big mouth” who had told lies about him and Munn ripping off other drug dealers.

Ross was also “paranoid” and thought police were flying over his house in helicopters listening in on his phone conversations, the court was told.

Munn was this morning screened from the three accused after fears he could be “intimidated” while he gives evidence.

The court has previously heard that Mr Munn had received a chilling death threat the day after the killings: “You’re next c. t.”

Crown prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher applied for Munn to be declared a special witness and give evidence via video link.

This was opposed by defence barristers who said Munn had told “lies” and needed to face the “glare” of the courtroom.

Magistrate John McInnes ruled that Munn should give evidence in court but ordered a screen be placed in front of the three accused to shield him.

Mr Munn told the court that Ross had told him that Brush was “hammering” him to meet up in “no man’s land” at Tallebudgera and showed him messages from the alleged bikie on a cypher phone.

“He said ‘it feels like they’re setting me up, what do you think?’,” Mr Munn told the court.

“I told him ‘if that’s how you feel, don’t go’.”
