A picture is emerging of the two teenagers accused of murder in relation to the death of Hervey Bay Uber driver Scott Cabrie.

Speaking to the media this week, Fraser Coast police officer Darrin Shadlow addressed questions regarding 18-year-old Tye Wayne Porter, and the 17-year-old boy charged over the matter.

Detective Superintendent Shadlow said Mr Cabrie had been working as an Uber driver early on February 7, 2023 when he received a job to collect three people from a home.

During the drive, weapons were used to try to rob Mr Cabrie, and in the attempt, he was killed, Det Supt Shadlow said police would allege.

Mr Cabrie’s body was found near a boat ramp at Howard on Sunday.

Mr Porter appeared briefly in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday, February 13, where his matter was adjourned until April 20, 2023.

He was charged with murder, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, arson, armed robbery and deprivation of liberty – unlawfully detain.

His co-accused, who cannot be named due to his age, had his case mentioned in Hervey Bay Children’s Court on Tuesday, February 14.

Det Supt Shadlow said both teens were known to police.

He said search warrants had been executed at residences as police continued to investigate Mr Cabrie’s death.

He said it was the matter was “shocking”.

“It’s shocking to have any form of violent crime of this nature, but for 17- or 18-year-olds, it probably does bring another level to it,” he said.

But Det Supt Shadlow denied youth crime was particularly bad in the Hervey Bay region.

He said the third person who was picked up by Mr Cabrie that night was assisting police with their investigations, while one of the teens had “to a certain degree” been assisting police with their investigations, but he would not confirm which one.

Det Supt Shadlow said neither of the teens were on bail.

Neither had been through the court system, he said.

The 17-year-old had been dealt with under the Youth Justice Act previously, he said.

The police investigation into Mr Cabrie’s death is still ongoing and anyone with information on suspicious activity, particularly around the Pacific Haven and Howard boat ramp areas, is encouraged to come forward and talk to police.
