Kelley Marie Drew pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs

A mum has narrowly avoided time in jail by proving to a court she has kicked her drug habit after being busted with multiple bags of meth.

A mum who was busted with 37 grams of meth has narrowly avoided being sent to prison after she showed she had turned her back on drugs.

Kelley Marie Drew, 35, pleaded guilty to aggravated possession of dangerous drugs at Maryborough Supreme Court on Monday.

Crown prosecutor Christopher Cook said the large quantity of drugs had been discovered at Drew’s home after police executed as raid.

Multiple bags of meth were discovered amounting to 37 grams which had a “high purity” Mr Cook said.

The amount was for “mixed use,” Mr Cook said, with both a commercial purpose and for Drew’s own use.

An examination of her phone found no evidence of her supplying drugs, the court heard.

The court was told Drew had a traumatic childhood and was estranged from her mother, who was also a drug user.

Testing of her hair follicles revealed she had been clean of drugs for a year, the court was told.

Drew was working seven days a week as well as having kicked her drug habit, the court was told

Justice Graeme Crow said Drew seemed to have turned her back on drugs.

But he said she needed to understand how serious the offence was and the damage that drugs could do in the community.

He said she knew the impact drugs could have on people in the community, as she had seen its effect on her own mother and on herself.

“These drugs are designed to be highly addictive,” Justice Crow said.

He described Drew’s rehabilitation as “excellent” but said she would need to focus on staying away from drugs even when she was experiencing tough times.

Drew was sentenced to three years’ prison with immediate release on parole.
