An ice addict who brutally tortured his own mother has again faced court, this time for a violent attack on a young woman he was sharing a home with.

John Rene Hansen, 34, pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault, four counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one count of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and one count of wilful damage when he faced Hervey Bay District Court on Thursday.

As he was sentenced, Hansen blew kisses to his family from the dock, including his mother, who was in court supporting him.

Crown prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher said in 2016, Hansen had been sentenced to six years in prison for torture.

“It was a significant torture over a five day period on his own mother,” Ms Gallagher said.

The new offences were committed in Toogoom on two separate dates against a 20-year-old woman.

Photos of the woman were submitted to the court, which showed bruising from the woman’s injuries, which had been caused when a phone was thrown at her, when she was punched in the jaw and placed in a chokehold, the court heard.

Defence barrister Phillip Hardcastle said his client had worked as a concreter in the past, but had battled an ice addiction.

He said Hansen was “very employable,” having completed numerous certificates.

He had put on 30kg since being in jail and away from drugs, the court heard.

Judge Michael Burnett said it was “particularly unmanly behaviour” to strike the woman as Hansen did.

“I note that when you were subsequently interviewed by police, you were deemed unable to interview because of your highly emotional state,” he said.

Judge Burnett said the most serious offence in Hansen’s criminal history was the torture of his mother.

He said drug abuse was a major issue for Hansen, as was his inability to move past his relationship breakdowns.

Hansen was given a head sentence of two years and nine months in prison with immediate release on parole, taking into account time already served.
