A young woman fatally shot on the Sunshine Coast had recently shared her excitement at getting engaged, as witnesses to the arrest of one of her accused killers described the dramatic takedown.
Residents of a Sippy Downs street have described the moment dozens of police came “roaring around the corner” of Fitzwilliam Drive late on Friday afternoon to arrest Bradley Ian Cotten, 30. He was later charged with the shooting murder of Feebie McIntosh.
A second man, also aged 30, was also charged with murder overnight. Police said the Wartulla man was charged with one count of murder, unlawful possession of a category A weapon, two counts of possession of dangerous drugs (cannabis and methylamphetamine) and one count each of possession of tainted property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and unlicensed driving.
Cotten’s arrest on Friday came hours after another man, aged 58, made a mercy dash to hospital with Ms McIntosh after she’d been shot in the head during a visit to a house in Dicky Beach.
The 25-year-old was pronounced dead at Caloundra Hospital.
Detective Inspector Dave Drinnen said yesterday a forensic examination of the crime scene had been completed and police were awaiting the results of an autopsy, expected back in days.
Inspector Drinnen said Ms McIntosh had been a visitor at the Dicky Beach address where she was shot. He said a woman lived at the home.
Cotten was tracked to Sippy Downs where officers surrounded him before taking him into custody about 4.30pm. It is not known whether he has any connection to Fitzwilliam Drive. Cotten, of Narangba, was handcuffed and placed in a forensic suit, witnesses said.
Cotten was denied police bail and did not appear in person or via video when the matter was mentioned at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Saturday.
A Sippy Downs resident speculated whether the accused had come down the street in a desperate bid for freedom.
The resident said the street was swarming with police.
“It felt a bit like the Gold Coast, or Sydney,” one resident said.
“The police came roaring around the corner, we didn’t know what was going on. Then the guy was in handcuffs and being led away.
“He didn’t look too happy.”
Another resident said he saw officers in marked police vehicles preparing a tyre deflation device prior to the arrest.
Meanwhile, a bouquet of flowers and a card was placed at Ms McIntosh’s Currimundi home. Her family declined to comment when approached.
Ms McIntosh had posted on social media about her excitement at getting engaged to boyfriend Mitch White just days before her death.
Mr White, who is in Borallon Correctional Centre, appeared to have proposed to Ms McIntosh via a letter he sent from behind bars.
“You’re the most sweetest man ever and the best part is, you’re all mine!” Ms McIntosh wrote in the May 6 post.
The letter was accompanied by a hand-drawn “find-a-word” that spelled out “Feebie will you marry me” and the words “You’re the love of my life and I can’t wait to get out and start our own little family”.
Friends flooded Ms McIntosh’s Facebook page with tributes, describing her as “bubbly, beautiful and caring”.
“This is heartbreaking and the hardest part is trying to process the fact that you are never coming back and (I) won’t ever be able to see you or talk to you again,” one wrote.
“Why you? It’s not fair. So young and still had so much life to live.”
Another wrote: “I can’t believe you’re gone. You had such a good soul. Whenever I needed someone, you would be there. You helped me through some of my hardest times. I’m blessed to have had such a good friend and hold so many happy memories.”
Cotten had his murder case adjourned until July 29.
The Wartulla man has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.
