A Fortitude Valley father-of-four has been warned by an Ipswich magistrate about quitting alcohol if he wants to stay out of jail.

Danny William Hogg, 45, pleaded guilty to more than 15 offences on Monday, July 1, at Ipswich Magistrates Court.

He was charged with 17 offences including count of entering a dwelling and committing and one count of creating disturbance or nuisance.

The court heard Mr Hogg was drunk on March 6 last year, yelling and swearing as well as threatening to punch himself and self harm.

He also entered an unlocked hostel room in the Brisbane CBD on January 3 last year and stole a handbag and when confronted later was found with a wallet containing $300, the court heard.

Defence lawyer Tracy Bowen said Mr Hogg was a single father with three young children and one adult child.

Ms Bowen said he had a history of alcohol and substance abuse.

“He has some brain injury that affects his short term memory,” she said.

“Due to poor self esteem issues he has attended rehab in the past year.

“He has abstained or is in the process of abstaining from substance misuse since he’s been freed from prison.”

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella agreed that the offences appeared to all be related to alcohol.

“Your offending arises through what’s commonly called human frailty, as opposed to something much more nefarious,” he said.

“And I understand that you are working towards abstinence and clearly are in a period of that.

“You’ll stay out of prison if you stay in the groove.”

He sentenced Mr Hogg to 11 months’ jail but declared 134 day he had spent in custody as time served.

Mr Hogg will be eligible for parole on July 19.
