A man charged with attempted murder over a Boxing Day shooting near Brisbane has had his bail refused despite the court hearing he planned to contest the charges.

Glen Kenneth Edwards, 54, represented by the duty lawyer, applied for bail at Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The Mount Chalmers man faced charges of attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, authority required to possess explosives, obstruct police, possession of a knife in a public place, and unlawful stalking/intimidation/harassment/abuse.

Police alleged the defendant shot a firearm towards a 22-year-old Rosevale man on a Scenic Rim road on December 26 last year.

She said Edwards told police the man had hid behind a woman who was accompanying him and that “he would have got him” if he hadn’t done so.

Police prosecutor sergeant Jo Colston said it was good luck that the victims are still alive today.

“[The victims were] unknown to him until they crossed paths with him,” she said.

Sgt Colston said the charges are extremely serious.

“The community would be put at such great risk if this defendant was granted bail,” she said.

The court heard that Edwards was not on bail during the offence, and he had a private lawyer to contest the charges.

The court was also told that Edwards would head to the hospital for mental health assessment if he were to be released on bail.

In the mention on Monday, which had been adjourned, police prosecutor Brad Dick said the defendant was an “extreme risk to the public”.

He said a psychologist assessment had labelled Edwards as “psychotic” and reported “dysphoric mood” and “widespread delusional system”.

“He continues to feel persecuted, he’s acted on his delusions in a very serious and dangerous way,” Sgt Dick said.

Magistrate Robert Walker on Tuesday said it appeared to be a strong case against Edwards for the attempted murder offence.

“You allegedly fired a weapon at a man otherwise unknown to you after you followed his vehicle for some considerable time at close distance,” he said.

“He decided to stop the vehicle to find out what was going on … The projectile passed so close to him that he could feel the effect.”

Mr Walker refused his bail application.

Edwards asked Mr Walker whether he could speak after hearing the decision but his request was ignored.

He was remanded in custody, and the matter was adjourned to January 22 for committal mention.
