A spectator has been hit in the head by a cricket ball at a local T20 grand final on the Gold Coast.

The middle-aged man was injured while watching the Gold Coast Cricket T20 grand final between Queens and the Gold Coast Dolphins at Choice Homes Oval in Oxenford.

He had been standing behind the fence and had attempted to catch a six when the ball went through his hands and hit him in the head.

He lay motionless on the ground in the aftermath as spectators, players and officials rushed to his aid, but could be seen walking to a chair minutes later.

The ball had struck the man in the cheek and his face was left bloodied.

An ambulance arrived at about 3.40pm to treat the man, and a Queensland Ambulance Services spokesman confirmed paramedics were called to the incident at 3.29pm.

He said the male patient was transported to John Flynn hospital in a stable condition after reportedly being hit in the face with a cricket ball.

The match had been delayed for close to 10 minutes as players and officials checked on the man before play resumed.

“We did everything we could to assist him,” a Gold Coast Cricket spokesman said following the incident.

“He’s obviously been hit pretty hard, his teeth are okay, his eyes are okay but he’s quite swollen, hopefully there’s no fracture to his cheek.

“We’ll follow up on him, funnily enough his son’s out on the field as the umpire and we all know him pretty well so we’ll contact him tonight and make sure he’s okay.”
