Australia’s largest junior soccer tournament has come to a close on the Gold Coast.
In their home tournament, Magic United clinched the title in the under-15 girls, while a captivating F90 outfit outclassed Logan Lightning in the under-17 girls final. In the under-16 boys, Peninsula Power flexed their muscle to be crowned champions.
The first week of competition wrapped up with Rochedale Rovers FQ1 and Gold Coast United claiming the Under-13 and Under-14 boys divisions respectively.
Logan Lightning capped off their strong tournament to down home side Magic United 2-0 in a tense under-15 boys grand final.
“We had a pretty flat semi final performance, I felt like we’d been the best team all tournament but you’ve got to earn it,” said coach Nick Croyden.
“We got into the game nicely and played our football, Magic pressed us really high and hard which didn’t allow us to play to the best of our ability but from there we found some solutions and started to break them down.”
A penalty gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.
“I spoke at half-time about just changing how we broke them down and to the boys credit they listened and applied that tactic and we controlled the second half,” Croyden said.
“It was a little bit scrappy but most finals are, it’s more of a contest and more physical.”
Crucially, Logan also took their chances when they presented. Magic missed a golden opportunity to equalise in the second half when what was an essentially open goal was missed, and Logan scored down the other end less than 30 seconds later thanks to a clinical finish from tournament MVP Kingston.
