The North Queensland finals of the AFL Queensland Schools Cup kicked off at Riverway Stadium on Monday, with Townsville schools winning five of six games on the opening day.

Townsville’s two senior teams had mixed results on Monday, with Kirwan State High School claiming victory in the women’s competition while Ryan Catholic College was beaten by Moranbah SHS 10.4 (64) to 6.10 (46).

After trailing by 14 points at the first break, Ryan’s senior boys kept Moranbah scoreless until the final minute of the second term, when William Westcott cleaned up some crumbs to give his side a slender halftime lead.

Just two points split the schools at the final intermission, before Moranbah put its foot down and kicked five goals to run away with the win.

Kirwan represented the Townsville region in the senior female division, claiming a 10.12 (72) to 5.1 (31) victory over Moranbah SHS as star midfielder Renee Ford bagged two goals.

Kirwan carried a three-goal lead into the final break but kicked away with five goals in the final term while Moranbah could only add a goal and a behind.

Kirwan’s other team beat Mackay SHS 11.11 (77) to 2.1 (13) in the junior boys competition, while St Margaret Mary’s College obliterated Moranbah 17.32 (134) to 1.0 (6) in the junior girls.

Ignatius Park beat Moranbah SHS 8.7 (55) to 7.2 (44) in the youth boys, and St Margaret Mary’s beat Moranbah 10.15 (75) to 0.0 (0) in the youth females division.

More than 600 students competed across the six divisions, with finals taking place on Tuesday. The winners from each division will book themselves a spot in the premier Queensland finals to be played on the Sunshine Coast in October.
