THE MATCHES

LANGER RESERVES

Marsden SHS’s Mana Whakatau scored the winner two minutes from fulltime in a Langer Reserves thriller.

From the scrum Whakatau blasted over to score beneath the posts.

Palm Beach Currumbn’s Josh Lynn had engineered his team’s recovery after Marsden twice looked in control at the start of both halves.

PBC closed the 10 point deficit to 14-10, 11 minutes from fulltime when second rower Diesel Bergsma cut back on the inside with a nice right foot step to open an avenue to the tryline.

The Coast side then drew level when centre Cooper Cambey reached out to score after five-eight Josh Lynn had again shown his class.

Earlier, the reserves turned at the halftime break with Marsden SHS leading 14-4.Marsden took command early, winning the possession battle and making the most of a territorial advantage and a high completion rate.

Impressive left edge backrower Eli Tuli positioned himself nicely in anticipation of an inside ball to stretch out and score for Marsden.

Mako’s winger AJ Nanai then glided over in the right corner after a nice ball from fullback Apa Twidle.

But PBC worked their way back into the game, slowly and surely, and after camping on the attack for three successive sets, centre Shadrach Lemusu put his winger Zac Munn in to score.

A charge down by Marsden’s Dylan Gallagher then handed his side an unexpected chance to reply seconds before the break.

After halfback Cody Hamilton straightened the play and took the line on, his prop Whare Hare-Herbert powered over to score from crash ball close to the line.

WALTERS CUP

Two tries in five minutes swept Palm Beach Currumbin SHS past Marsden SHS in a grand curtain-raiser to the Langer Trophy clash.

PBC won 12-4, with winger Luka Skipps snaring the crucial try nine minutes from fulltime.

PBC halfback Zane Harrison had also scored with 14 minutes to go.

On both occasions Ra-Koai Smith was as cool as a cucumber to slot home left footed conversions which raised his side ahead of their rivals.

It was a thriller throughout the second half.

When PBC halfback Zane Harrison wove his way through, his team threatened to score but Marsden centre Saxon Innes showed the reflexes of a cat to drag down the pass and intercept the ball.

After PBC hit the front in the second half, Will Saunders pushed forward and made a half break in search of the match-winning try, but his pass went to ground under heavy pressure from Marsden defenders.

Marsden SHS had the better of the first half in terms of territory, but the Palm Beach Currumbin defence as outstanding.

Marsden SHS drew first blood 15 minutes into the game when stream rolling winger Richard Henry powered down the right hand sideline to score.

Henry resembled a Mac Truck rolling down the hill.

No matter what Palm Beach Currumbin SHS tried, nothing could slow his progress until he reached the tryline.

Henry had another crack at the line from closer range, but this time his opponent Tyrese Bowman was on his case, throwing his body into the fray.

LANGER TROPHY

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS held on to pip Marsden SHS in a Langer Trophy special tonight.

PBC won 28-22, surviving a dramatic comeback from Marsden SHS who trailed 18-4 at halftime, and then 28-16 late in the match.

Marsden had both barrels loaded two minutes from fulltime as they pushed for a match equalling try, but a fumbled ball took the air of Marsden’s balloon and PBC survived.

What a game it was.

Earlier, the old firm of Tom Weaver and Oskar Bryant seemed to be lifting their side to what could be a title defining win over Marsden SHS.

In a match worthy of a grand final, half Weaver and dummy half Bryant orchestrated an exceptional first half performance around the granite like shoulders of their forward pack as PBC rose to an 18-4 advantage.

PBC’s defence was outstanding in restricting their rivals in the seemingly match-winning 18-4 advantage, and then with the ball Weaver and Bryant expertly worked their magic.

Bryant’s running game and long dummy half passes opened play up for his side, and behind Weaver zeroed in on his runners - either with short kicks or passes.

Twice in the first half PBC scored tries from Weaver’s kicks - with Reef Sommerville swooping onto a grubber and Michael Roberts leaping for a cross field kick as PBC led 18-4 at halftime.

But there is plenty of steel in this Marsden SHS side, and when they returned for the second half they raised their game.

They ran with the same intensity as the first half, but seemed to play the ball quicker which gave the side some momentum.

A storming run from Sione Fotuaika then created a try, with his offload to Will Semu allowing Semu to put Teapo Stoltman over to score.

The margin was cut to 18-10 and that game was on.Marsden’s big bopper Xavier Stowers then impacted the match with a thunderous run into the teeth of the ruck which jolted PBC.

Stowers then unloaded to his front row partner in crime Lance Fualema who plunged over to score under the posts.

With 15 minutes to play, PBC led just 18-16.

But with 12 minutes remaining Ryan Foran ran an inside angle to reach out and score, raising PBC to a 22-16 lead.

Then Jack Cullen powered over and life was just a little more comfortable for PBC, but back Marsden came courtesy of a thumping try to Taelon Te-Whiu Hopa which gave their side a chance of drawing..

In the first half PBC’s cement like defence was a highlight, and it took a long ball from Marsden No.6 Jayden Stilinovich to get his side on the ball.

After Marsden had unsuccessfully hammered through the forwards at their rivals, Stilinovich called backs ball and lofted his pass into space, enabling winger Luke Bossons to cross. PBC lead 12-4.

PBC scored with their first attack ball, with half Tom Weaver threading a kick past Marsden’s advancing defensive line for his centre Reef Sommerville to score.

Weaver landed the conversion from wide out.

Weaver had accepted a beautiful long, long dummy half pass from returning No.9 Bryant which aided the timing of Weaver’s attacking grubber.

Bryant then almost scored himself after 12 minutes, but Marsden closed in on the line.

Earlier, it was a sprinter’s paradise when PBC’s Michael Roberts and Marsden SHS’s winger on debut Rylan Fleming had a foot race after Roberts had cracked the defensive line with a ruck run coming out of his terrtory.

For a moment Roberts looked try bound, but Fleming emerged to slow him, allowing Teapo Stoltman to round him up.

But with Marsden on the backfoot, Weaver moved ball wide to where Marsden were out flanked and centre Deine Mariner strolled over.
