David Lems reported a blistering second half comeback secured Ipswich State High a vital 14-12 victory over Wavell State High in a thrilling Langer Trophy showdown.
After being unable to break through Wavell’s defensive wall and trail 8-0 at halftime, Ipswich’s confidence grew rapidly after winger Damien Burrows crossed for two superb tries.
A third four-pointer to powerhouse forward Rene Bagon put Ipswich in front 14-12 for the first time and it was then the defence of the visiting side that sealed the win.
Ipswich’s second success in the schoolboy competition levelled them with Wavell on wins as the scramble for top five Langer Trophy spots hots up.
Apart from Burrows, Ipswich’s best included Bagon, Josiah Pahulu, Jarvis Yeatman and captain Kulikefu Finefeiuiaki who provided the superbly timed pass to set up Burrows match-turning second try.
And Cooombabah SHS coach Sam Meskell had high praise for his defence’s defence in keeping St Mary’s to nil. More from that match on tomorrow’s Six Things We Learned from Round 5 story.

LANGER TROPHY - Mabel Park SHS v Marsden SHS
Marsden SHS were dragged into the fight of their lives before pulling away 38-22 over cross town rivals Mabel Park SHS in thrilling Langer Trophy schoolboy league tonight.
A bright yellow comet in the form of Mabel Park SHS’s First XIII streaked into Marsden SHS territory and threatened to steal a shock upset victory after leading 18-12.
Wearing distinctive bright yellow jerseys, Mabel Park SHS ambushed their rivals, playing a scintillating up-tempo game to greatly disturb Marsden’s rhythm and take them out of their comfort zone.
Mabel Park’s commitment to the cause could be heard at the end of their halftime huddle when a voice uttered: “We will win this game ... one, two, three’’ before a cheer as they broke up to take positions ahead of the restart.
A dropped ball presented centre Scaughan Enoka with a stunning turn over try second before halftime to send his side into the lead 18-12.
Spurred on at every turn by a passionate supporter base, Mabel Park were physical, but skilful as well, with switches in play - all at speed - troubling Marsden SHS.
Mabel Park SHS would have extended its 18-12 halftime lead five minutes into the second half, had Marsden forward Sione Fotuaika not made a try saving tackle. Fotuaika copped a blood nose for his trouble, but it was worth the ward wound for his side.
It was a thrilling first half after Marsden prop Xavier Stowers had opened the scoring.
Enterprising backrowers Jamie Zaghini and Kena Finau both crossed for Mabel Park, with Zaghini’s try coming from a beautifully rehearsed movement as the ball was switched in play.
Teapo Stoltman’s try righted the ship for Marsden SHS momentarily, but Mabel Park were no Flash Dans, with sustained intensity prevailing, no matter the circumstances.Atunasia Pahulu’s conversions all aided Mabel Park’s assault.
It was the land of the giants when Alex Leapai (Mabel Park SHS) and Xavier Stowers (Marsden SHS) were on the field at the same time, with Leapai’s intensity eye-catching and Stowers’ brunt strength increasingly impressive.
Stowers second try of the night, which elevated Marsden to 18-all, was just brunt strength in contact.
Marsden recaptured the lead 24-18 with the try of the night scored by sprint king Tea-Rani Woodman after a miracle ball by Will Semu following a Chris Faatgutu break.
It was a sensational play by Semu, a Titans contracted player.
Woodman, who is lightning, was in again minutes later but despite increasing its lead to 28-18, no one expected Mabel Park SHS to fade away.
Stoltman, a Canberra Raiders contracted player, then added another late try.
LANGER RESERVES REPLAY: Marsden SHS v Mabel Park SHS
Marsden SHS survived a scare from cross town counterparts Mabel Park SHS to win the Langer Reserves this afternoon 32-18.
A tremendous performance from Mabel Park SHS halfback Glen Fisher was the highlight of the match on a wind swept afternoon.
Fisher scored two tries as Mabel Park closed the gap to 26-18 before Luke Bossons’ second try 90 seconds from full-time to the match to bed for Marsden SHS.
After a poor start which saw the side hand over too much possession, Marsden SHS settled to lead 20-6 just after halftime.
Apa Twidle’s left side try wide of the ruck was the perfect start for coach Chris Freeman, but Mabel Park were not done with.
Halfback Glenn Fisher produced an inspiring individual try under the posts after he backed himself through the teeth of the Marsden forwards.
But forward warhorse Terry Lafoai made it 26-12 to Marsden 12 minutes from the end and the home side were well positioned to win.
Earlier in the first half, Marsden SHS and Mabel Park SJS traded early tries, with Mabel No.13 AJ powering over to take a 6-nil lead.
Marsden almost scored when Dom Sandow wove his magic, but a magnificent last line of defence effort from his opposite Lennox prevented a try.
However, Marsden SHS did score back to back tries, both snared by their wingers, Luke Bossons and AJ Nanai, on the extremities of the field.
Marsden extended its lead when Eli Tuli latched onto a pass from Chambers Horua-Chase after Bossons had supported a run by his centre Rylan Fleming.
Cody Hamilton’s successful conversion raised Marsden to a 14-6 advantage.
WALTERS CUP, Marsden SHS v Redcliffe SHS
A semi trailer with the number plate Elijah Leatigaga barrelled over the top of a gutsy Redcliffe SHS in Walters Cup action this afternoon.
Marsden SHS won 48-nil, with Leatigaga and his front row partner TJ Sivanila doing the old fashioned grunt work, enabling slick halfback Coby Black to run his side.
Ultimately tries just before and after halftime proved crucial in the clash.
Marsden SHS took a 14-nil advantage into the halftime break, after a beautifully worked left edge try by Saxon Innes, whose interchange of passing with his winger Tyrell Tuimalealifano scattered the Redcliffe edge defence.
Then, 90 seconds into the second half, a barnstorming run from Leatigaga finished with a try next to the posts and at 20-nil, it was a bridge too far for Redcliffe.
Leatigaga then added a second, powerhouse try and the match was over.
Redcliffe showed promise.
After struggling to contain Marsden’s opening salvos, Redcliffe were more than competitive, but Leatigaga’s double was a mortal blow.
Marsden SHS were slick early and set a high standard for the Redcliffe players to elevate themselves to.

ROUND 4 REPLAY, IPSWICH V COOMBABAH SHS
The match was just minutes old when Marley Rudolph was involved in a right side raid that ended in winger Richard Henry scoring.
Halfback Toby Black then finished off a text book set of six from Marsden SHS to score in the eight minute, and with props TJ Sivanila and Elijah Leatigaga powering forward, Marsden were on their way.
Redcliffe SHS then worked themselves into the game and back-to-back-to-back sets gave them their best attacking opportunity, but Marsden’s defence was up to the challenge.
Late in the game winger Henry scored his second try after Monte Betham had expertly put him up the sideline.
