REFRESHED and refocused. Ready to rebuild their 2021 Langer Trophy rugby league campaign.

That’s the goal of Ipswich State High’s senior team when it resumes playing in the prestigious schoolboy tournament.

In Tuesday’s livestreamed match at 4.30pm, Ipswich State High tackles Langer Cup newcomers Coombabah at the North Ipswich Reserve.

After three consecutive losses before the break, the Ipswich State High players are hoping a school holiday camp on the Sunshine Coast revitalises their energy and brings a change of fortune.

The players had three days of training and spent time with the Queensland women’s Origin team, led by Ipswich-bred captain Ali Brigginshaw.

“It was a great experience for our boys to watch the Queensland women train,’’ Ipswich State High head coach Josh Bretherton said.

“Their professionalism and attention to detail was an excellent insight for our boys.

“The boys have got to know Ali through her time spent at Ipswich State High so she came over to chat to the boys after training. She is brilliant with the boys.

“They were very excited when she then organised the opportunity to go and meet the rest of the (Queensland) girls.’’

In Langer Trophy matches so far, Ipswich State High went down to Palm Beach Currumbin 44-12, Marsden (Makos) 48-10 and Keebra Park 24-6.

Given his team’s improved performance before the school holidays, Bretherton is eager to see his players respond against Coombabah which has one win from its three games.

“We had the three-day training camp to finish the term and hopefully refresh everyone, refocus,’’ Bretherton said.

“It’s certainly come at very good time.

“We have not had the strongest start to the year so it was good to get away, spend some time together, get everybody reset to set our target for the second half of the season.

“We had a really good trip.’’

The school’s top 35 players attended the camp at Currimundi before some more training back at school during the break “to get back on track’’.

Having only lost 22-18 to defending premiers Palm Beach Currumbin, Coombabah look to have some quality in their side.

“There’s no easy games. It’s a very strong comp,’’ he said.

However, Bretherton is backing his players to support captain Kulikefu Finefeuiaki to secure their first 2021 Langer Trophy victory.

“He’s a kid who gives us his best,’’ Bretherton said. “He always plays with intensity.

“He’s doing a real good job.

“All of the boys were just trying to share the confidence to take on their own role, their own kind of leadership where we have struggled a little bit.

“One of the areas we identified is we just need to all take a bit of responsibility, start talking more, being a bit more proactive.

“We’re pushing it very much as a group mentality at the moment. We’ve all got to just be better.’’

Centre Damien Burrows returns from a shoulder injury and lock Jarvis Yeatman comes back as well after playing in round one.

“Getting both of them back in will help add some strength. Hopefully some quality,’’ the coach said.
