REPLAY: Langer Trophy - Keebra Park vs St Mary's

St Mary’s College’s Langer Cup campaign has come to an end after a tough 46-12 defeat at the hands of Keebra Park SHS.

Without inspirational captain Xavier Va’a, as well as a number of other key players, St Mary’s remained firmly in the contest at Toowoomba Sports Ground.

Trailing 18-12 inside the final 20 minutes, a closing rampage from Keebra Park turned the contest into a one-sided affair late.

Keebra coach Glen Campbell said he’d always suspected his side were capable of such a performance.

The big win over St Mary’s is proof they have it in them.

“In week’s gone past we’d started well and finished poor, now we’ve done it the other way,” Campbell said.

“Once we put that together and start well and finish well we’ll be much happier.

“We had a very good game from Yorel Alapaki off the bench. Blake Mozer was outstanding and Tuvalli Khan-Pereira played well at fullback but we generally played well off each other.”

With nothing less than a win enough to keep their finals hopes alive, St Mary’s showed a strong defensive intensity to start the contest.

St Mary’s had to withstand immediate pressure from Keebra Park, who earned a repeat set with their first touch of the ball.

They held solid, and capitalised when given the chance, as Blake Moore put a perfectly-timed grubber through for a flying Brayden Paix to open the scoring after eight minutes.

A nice backline movement off the back of a quick play the ball gave Keebra a golden opportunity down the grandstand side, and they made the most of it, with Levi Jones crossing in the corner in the 15th minute to level scores up at 6-all.

Just as Keebra looked set to extend their lead, winger Mitch Lorenz picked off an attempted cut-out pass, running 90m to once again put St Mary’s in front.

After the visitors looked to be caught napping at dummy half, they were let off the hook by a penalty, with another proving too much for St Mary’s to handle, as Yorel Alapaki barged his way over from close range to tie things up once again.

With a chance to attack the line before halftime, Moore stepped his way through three defenders, only to be tackled inches from the goal line.

Keebra held them out, and off the back of another penalty, worked their way downfield to take their first lead of the game and an 18-12 advantage heading into the sheds.

With the second half getting underway, Keebra Park again had all the early running, and Jones looked certain to score his second, before desperate defence from Tyson Stevens helped him over the sideline.

Errors began to creep in for both sides throughout the early stages of the second half, but ultimately the visitors were able to strike first, with Jones getting his double as Keebra peppered the St Mary’s line, pushing the lead to 24-12 with 16 minutes remaining.

Another incomplete set from St Mary’s was punished by Keebra Park, with their fifth try of the contest putting the game out of reach in the 49th minute.
