DIVISION 1 GRAND FINAL: Kedron Wavell v University
Kedron Wavell were back-to-back BWHA Division 1 premiers after a thrilling win over University of Queensland tonight at the State Hockey Centre.
A penalty stroke from Hockeyroo great Jodie Kenny 10 minutes from fulltime broke the deadlock, delivering a 2-1 victory.
The club’s win followed last year’s break through, historic first ever Div 1 title.
Kedron Wavell have gone from no premierships in 2018 to two in a row and coach Nikki Taylor could not be more proud.
Taylor said most satisfying was the manner in which her side progressed during the season.
“Today was probably not our best game, but finals are never pretty,’’ Taylor said.
“Every single girl contributed and that is what you want. There were not one or two stars, it was a team effort.’’
It was a gripping finale to a great final between two evenly matched teams.
The game seemed destined for a shoot-out but Kenny’s expert intervention saved the respective coaches from chewing their finger nails even lower.
After a scoreless first half, both teams traded goals in the all important third quarter as the game started to open up a little.
Jemma Punch broke the deadlock just after halftime when Kedron Wavell capitalised on a penalty corner.
Punch, a Kedron Wavell junior, beamed with delight before getting down to business again from the restart.
It was a splendid moment for Punch who would have been in the USA playing college hockey had it not been for the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.
“I am really grateful to be here helping out my team mates,’’ Punch said.
“I missed out last year because obviously I was in the US at this time but it is great to share this with the girls seeing I have been with Kedron for 15 or 16 years now.’’
Punch revealed Kenny had ushered her to the left part of the inner circle prior to the penalty stroke being taken which saw her score.
“Jodie said keep on the left, get a touch on it and I said ‘righto, I will be there’.’’
But after Punch’s goal, Jacquie Graf then equalised for Uni, also in the third quarter, and it was game on.
Following Graf’s goal, University team mate Rhyleigh Brown almost snared an amazing goal but her desperate lunge to deflect the ball in was in vain.
There was not a struck match between the two teams in the first half and the nil-all scoreline was an accurate reflection on the encounter.
A war wound to Kedron Wavell’s Savannah Fitzpatrick, when she was struck on the cheek during a frantic inner circle scramble as the Wolves threatened, was an example of the intensity of the clash.
It was a tense opening to the match, with the first corner not until the 19th minute after a scoreless opening term.
The ball was cannoed to University’s Tatum Stewart who blasted her shot into a brick wall of defenders and the score remained nil-all.
When Kedron Wavell had its first chance at a penalty corner, Hockeyroo great Jodie Kenny stepped up to the mark but her shot was deflected away.

It was the first in a succession of corners for Kedron Wavell but Uni held firm.
Just before Kenny’s penalty stroke to break the deadlock, she fired off a cannon from a penalty corner, but Uni goal keeper Jordan Buss halted the ball.
Kedron Wavell’s winner were also feathers in the caps of rookies Courtney Davis and Georgie West who have contributed to the club’s golden era.

DIVISION 2: University of Qld vs Commercial
DIVISION 3: Commercial v Kedron Wavell
Kedron Wavell goal keeper Gennessa Lee was the hero as the Wolves claimed the Division 3 BWHA title for the second successive year this afternoon, wining 2-nil.
“She saved our butts,’’ praised Kedron Wavell coach Pam Patteson.
Kedron Wavell turned around a 4-2 loss to Commercial in the home-and-away season to inch past their rivals in a desperate encounter.
Kedron Wavell scored a goal in each half, but around that Commercial challenged their rivals intensely.
Wolves captain Lee Hawker put her side in front 2-nil after 52 minutes and the Wolves could at last glimpse back to back premierships after absorbing constant pressure from their rivals early in the second half.

BRITT WILKINSON’S MILESTONE MOMENT
Commercial upped the ante on their rivals after a halftime pep talk from the coaches, pushing hard for an equalising goal.
But the Kedron Wavell goal keeper Lee was fantastic in this period, helping her side repel the Cobras.
With the scores 2-nil and with 10 minutes to play, Commercial captain Karen Stennett looked likely to score, but Lee came forward and halted Stennett’s charge into the inner circle.
Then with six minutes to play Commercial again went to skipper Stennett from a penalty corner, but nothing could get past Lee.
“We worked hard all season to get to this point,’’ Patteson said.
“They beat us 4-2 last time, and we came in here thinking it was going to be very, very tough and it was.But we just knew we had to stay with our game plan. I am so proud of them.’’
Both teams started nervously.
The first meaningful attacking raid came after 10 minutes when Commercial’s Karissa Vanderwath worked her way clear in the midfield and passed left to captain Stennett.
Stennett wound up and swatted a shot that was saved by Kedron Wavell keeper Lee.
Vanderwath was dangerous again later in the half and looked a key player in the Commercial set-up.
The opening goal midway through the half to Kedron Wavell when Jemima Bromback somehow found the back of the net while laying on the ground after losing her footing in the desperation to accept a pass from teammate Claire Kearney.
Bromback looked as surprised as anyone to pull off a grand final goal while sitting on the ground, but surprise soon turned to elation when she was engulfed by teammates.
Commercial’s next chance came when Ellie Kendall moved in an arch around the crowded inner circle, firing off a lofted shot that sailed to the left of the goals.
Commercial actually had the better of the territory, and generated six penalty corners to their opponents one, but the defence and goalie Lee held up.
DIVISION 2: Commercial v University of Queensland
University of Queensland claimed back-to-back division 2 premiership wins after a 3-nil victory over Commercial today.
A third quarter goal by Beth Westmore ensured Uni claimed the title.
All University players wore black arm bands in honour of the grandfather of teammates Abbey and Chloe Hill. Michael Hill passed away earlier in the week.
The Hill sisters were among University’s best in what was a comprehensive team performance.
Coach Greg Collins praised the fitness and dedication of his side.
“They run all day and the pressure they put on other teams is where we win most of our games,’’ he said.
“We are relentlessly running, putting pressure on the opposition and cutting down time.
“If they are doing those thing regularly, they are going to win a lot of games.’’
Uni put a down payment on victory just minutes into the second half when a brilliant team passing exchange from a penalty corner saw the side elevate its advantage to 2-nil.
Jess Wilkinson finished it off, but only after lovely variation saw Monique Brummer pass off to Abbey Hill who fed Wilkinson deep in the inner circle.
Earlier, Hill broke a nil-all deadlock 12 minutes into the second quarter when she converted a penalty corner into a goal that found its way past Commercial goalie Lara De Waal-Hart.
But it took a deflection to beat De Waal-Hart who had done splendidly up until that moment.
To score, Uni’s Brunner took the penalty shot and Hill got enough stick on the ball to deflect it past the keeper.
In the first quarter a brilliant reflex save from Waal-Hart off a reserve shot from Jess Wilkinson was one of the highlights of the game in the first half.

DIVISION 1 play-off: Commercial vs Ascot
Commercial won its play-off final 5-nil to secure third position in the BWHA Division 1 competition clash at the State Hockey Centre.
Two goals in the second quarter of the match saw the Cobras steadily construct victory, with Emma Hawley’s third quarter goal then lifting her side to a comfortable 3-nil advantage entering the final quarter.
After an even start when both teams probed, Commercial seized the initiative with two goals in two minutes.
In the 24th minute Dayle Dolkens struck a field goal and before Ascot could gather themselves, Commercial were in again courtesy of a well struck shot from Rosie Malone.
Ascot fought hard to stay in the game, and would have scored on the stroke of the three quarter time siren had Commercial’s Kasey Dolkens not saved the shot by producing an outstanding goal keeping performance.
It was a big moment in the match because a goal at the time would have given Ascot a sniff.
Hawley’s goal in the third term also raised the bar on an Ascot recovery, but Ascot refused to surrender in a gutsy last quarter effort.
However, the Reid sisters each scored goals for Commercial in the final quarter, closing the chapter on any possible recovery and the better side won.
Jade and Jessie Reid, the daughter of ex-hockeyroo and triple Olympian Sharon Buchanan OAM, polished their teams performance with their last quarter finishing skills.
