PINE RIVERS ST ANDREWS v EASTS
Pine Rivers St Andrews is the first team through to the J1 (Division 1, 13-18 years) hockey grand final after a 5-1 win over Easts.
The unbeaten minor premiers, Pine Rivers St Andrews led 4-nil at halftime and then added a fifth goal in the second half to Corey Punch.
Easts deservedly scored late through Noah Craig.
“The main thing we have been working on is consistency,’’ said Pine Rivers St Andrews coach Mitch Bolton.
“We have played maybe a good 25 minutes, 30 minutes the last couple of weeks but have not been able to make a full 50 minute game.
“And I said to the boys before the game that (consistency) is what it is going to take.’’
Easts’ coach Laurie Christensen said his young team was outclassed early by a better side.
“But in the second half we came back and it was one-all and we learnt from our mistakes,’’ he said.
“We just had to cut down on errors and the results will show.’’
Pine Rivers St Andrews laid the foundations for victory with a 4-nil first half effort.
Saints had a dream start with two goals in the opening seven minutes.
The dangerous Paul Hubbard converted a corner, with the sound of the ball hitting the back of the goal ricocheting around Burringbar Park.
Then Rky Thiessens finished off a movement after a telling run by team mate Corey Punch.
In between Easts had a corner but the shot was saved.
Easts’ Ben Ward then had a second chance via a corner, but the Saints goalie Cian McLaughlin was again up to the task.
Easts goalkeeper Tyler Christensen then made his own grand save soon after.
However, Saints iced the first half with two late goals courtesy of Jacob Anderson and Riley Profke.
There was a rich recent history between the two teams entering the clash.
Just last week the teams were locked at 2-all before Pine Rivers St Andrews broke the deadlock at the death.
KEDRON WAVELL SERVICES v BULIMBA
Connor Ring scored three goals as Kedron Wavell produced an accomplished performance to beat Bulimba 5-1 in the second semi-final.
Kedron Wavell got on the board after just four minutes through Joshua Ferns, but it was another 21 minutes before the second goal - a penalty stroke also struck by Ferns in a tight opening 25 minutes.
The scoreline could have blown out to 3-nil, but a superlative save from Bulimba goalie Damian Rapisardi prevented the goal early in the second half.
However, just minutes later Kedron Wavell did extend the lead when Connor Ring finished off a nice team build-up, and then added another courtesy of a Ring strike.
Bulimba manager Tim Armstrong had high praise for Kedron Wavell.
However, with the inclusion of more senior players next week after they were unavailable tonight, he was confident of an excellent bronze medal play-off performance.
“We had some of our juniors out there tonight, but full marks to Kedron Wavell,’’ he said, praising some of the fantastic goals by the opposition.
It was a fascinating contest in the opening half between the teams which have conceded the least amount of goals (Kedron Wavell) versus the team which has scored the most (Bulimba) during the season.
