THE MATCHES

ASCOT v REDLANDS

Ascot claimed back-to-back premiership with a 3-1 victory.

A second half goal from captain Julie Bennett was enough to consolidate Ascot’s narrow halftime lead and turn it into another title.

When asked what the secret to the team’s success was, coach Margie Brown said “persistence’’.

Bennett added “hard work’’ also had a lot to do with the season’s success.

“Everyone worked for each other, using each other,’’ Bennett said.

It was yet another milestone moment for Brown who has been associated with the famous Ascot club for 55 years.

Brown watched an even match unfold, with Ascot rising to a 2-1 halftime lead after Redlands’ shocked their rivals with a goal to Robyn Larcombe in the opening minutes.

It was Larcombe’s 10th goal of the season.

But Ascot were able to fightback through two goals by Samone Spall.

To level the scores Spall finished off a fantastic build-up to knock the ball past the keeper after displaying quick fire reflexes to flick an attacking pass on.

Then Spall was on hand to finish off a penalty shot after short passing between team mates.

The Ascot - Redlands clash was a replay of the 2019 grand final where Ascot won 4-1. Ascot have been in grand final for MM2 since 2016-2020.

KEDRON WAVELL v VALLEY

Kedron Wavell captain Leslie Anderson has praised the team work of her side after a 1-nil grand final win over a gallant Valley tonight.

Valley goal keeper Amanda Corrie Muller produced one of the saves of the season but it was not enough to prevent the grand final loss.

“As I said to the girls before we played tonight, the thing which sets our team apart is they were a whole team that did not rely on a couple of players,’’ Anderson said.

She said the squad had a sprinkling of Div 5 to Div 1 players but regardless “they passed the ball’’. “It is just such a good team.’’

Kedron Wavell laid a platform for victory with a first half goal to Leslie Anderson in a game where little separated the two teams.

But the 1-nil advantage looked certain to become 2-nil midway through the second half, had Corrie Muller remarkably not deflected a sharp shot to the right hand side of the goals.

The goalie raised her stick to a lofted shot, displaying remarkable anticipation and reflexes.

It was a moment which makes grand finals.

The match was a reply of the 2018 decider when Valley were winners.

Kedron Wavell, reigning premiers of MM1, beat Ascot in the grand final in 2019.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Valley MM1 player Pam Hird is currently playing Division 1 for Valley as well as MM1 and a Queensland Masters representative.

Kedron Wavell MM1 has a number of Queensland masters and under age representative players such as Alyson Aleksic, Abbey Hawker, Rowena Anderson.

For MM2, Ascot’ Samone Spall has scored 13 goals this season, and Redland’s Robyn Larcombe nine goals.
