Brisbane Bullets fans caught a sneak peek of what they are in for during the upcoming NBL season with several of the team’s shining on court in the Queensland State League.

In The Courier-Mail’s Game of the Week for round two, it was the Brisbane Capitals who took the spoils in both the men’s and women’s match-ups.

With NBL talents across the floor, including Jason Cadee and Cameron Goldfinch for the Capitals and Tanner Krebs for the Pirates, it was a Queensland veteran who stood out the most.

Capitals forward Jarred Bairstow, who made the switch to Brisbane from South West this year, was the game’s top scorer with 24 points and eight rebounds to lead his team to an 87-81 victory at the Hibiscus Sports Complex.

The victory is the Capitals’ first of the season after losing on the buzzer in the opening round to Nathan Sobey’s Ipswich Force.

Nick Stoddart was also impressive for Brisbane with 21 points, while Cadee struggled from the field, shooting just 5-18 but still had a major impact on the game, especially on the offensive end.

While for the Pirates, new Bullets recruit Tanner Krebs once again led the Pirates with a triple-double, including 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Pirates were once again without Bullets big man Matthew Hodgson as well as Mathiang Muo, Jono Mines and Max Kerle through injury.

“It was a challenging game for us, however I felt we were always in control of the game,” Capitals coach Sean Connelly said.

“Our young guys really stepped up in the absence of Anthony Kopcikas and Ben Wilson. “Nick Stoddart was a standout, along with another solid game from Bairstow.

“Down the stretch we were a little complacent, however with the experience of Cadee we were able to show our composure and steady the ship on a fast finishing pirates squad.

“We are growing as a squad and will take one game at a time as we build the chemistry with in the group.”

In the women’s clash, it was the young Capitals who dominated the Pirates on their way to a 79-40 victory, to remain undefeated after the first two games.

Brisbane dominated from the tip-off with the size of Meg Essex (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Grace George proving difficult for South West to contain.

But it was Capitals skipper Maddie Woodford, who was instrumental for her side with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists while young gun Georgia Woolley was also impressive with 22 points and 13 rebounds.

“We are using the qsl season to build a solid foundation and amongst our playing group for NBL1 next year, Capitals women’s coach Michael Van Dongen said.

“We have some young players who will benefit from increased opportunities this season.

“Tonight due to some great team defence and excellent ball movement, we were able to start the game well opening up driving lanes which led to some high percentage scoring opportunities

“This continued into the second quarter and we established a handy lead at the end of the half

We were a bit off the mark in the third qtr as south west made a run but we regained our focus from our leadership group and finished off the game confidently.”

The Courier-Mail will be livestreaming tomorrow’s game between the Southern Districts Spartans and Gold Coast Rollers with the women at 3pm and men at 5pm.
