League newcomers RedCity Roar have sprung an upset in the opening round of the Queensland State League basketball competition after their superstars dominated to beat the Logan Thunder.
Four months after the inaugural NBL1 North competiiton was meant to tip-off, elite basketball was back in Queensland and it returned with a bang with traditional heavyweights, Logan hosting RedCity at Bendigo Bank Stadium.
Both sides boasted star-studded sides in the men and women and it was their star trio of Harry Froling, William McDowell-White and Verle Williams Jr who led the Roar to a famous victory.

RedCity got off to a fast start, leading 20-2, with Froling finding his way to the basket and hitting from the perimeter before McDowell-White and Williams Jr followed suit.
From there, the Thunder couldn’t chase them down despite fighting back to single digits late in the first half.

RedCity ended up running away with a 122-109 win with Froling recording 43 points and 11 rebounds, McDowell-White supporting with 34 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds while Williams Jr had 25 points.
Mitch Young had an impressive outing with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Chris Cedar recorded 22 points.
In the women’s game it was the home side who took the spoils with the quarter of Mikaela Ruef, Ashley Taia, Mikhaela Cann and Chevannah Paalavast leading Logan past a RedCity team featuring Australian Opal Lauran Mansfield and New Zealand Tall Fern Ashleigh Karaitiana.
The first quarter was evenly matched before the Thunder pulled away late and then put on a double-digit run to close out the first half and lead by 22 points.
RedCity put up a fight in the third with Karaitiana lighting it up from the three-point line to have her team back within 10 before the Thunder responded and closed the game out with a 94-81 victory.
Taia topscored with 29 points while Ruef had 22 points and 19 rebounds, Paalvast had 19 points, seven rebounds and Cann also led from the front.
Karaitiana led the way for the visitors with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Mansfield had 17 points.
