Coaches nominate is back for another year and with the 2024 season underway, senior coaches from across the QAFL and QAFLW have had their say on a range of new topics.

Each round we will reveal who has stood out from each club, diving into unique topics such as best-one-on-one player, most underrated, craftiest forward and more.

This week we uncover the players who are the most accurate kicks for goal, whether it’s nailing their set shots every time or working magic without fault.

Check out what the coaches are saying.

QAFL

Aspley, Adrian Pilgrim: “We started slow as a team but Ray Hill was pretty solid at the beginning of the year. Obviously Connor Stackelberg gets plenty of opportunities and hit his straps last weekend.”

Broadbeach, Danny Nolan:Cody Harrington is a small pressure forward, and he doesn’t miss too often. The same could be said for Tom Reeves who is another small forward.”

Labrador, Clint Watts:Jake Goldsmith is long-time Labrador player who’s won multiple premierships. He kicked six goals against Mt Gravatt, pinch hits in ruck, is a good kicker by foot and efficient in front of goal.”

Maroochydore, Steve Wildschut: “Would be Mitch Scholard and he has been for sometime at this level.”

Morningside, Paul Egan: “Our full forward Keegan Downie. It’s what they’re in the team for so they should be the best in front of goal. I think Keegan’s hit 30 goals already through the first eight rounds.”

Noosa, Matthew Leuenberger: “I’d probably go with Curtis McCarthy. He goes through his motions well and hits them sweetly.“

Redland Victoria Point, Phil Carse:Matt Hamelmann would be hard to go past, he kicked 110 goals last year and has been the leading goal kicker for quite a while. Josh Brown is a small forward and kicked 55 goals last year which is pretty exceptional. (He already has a bag of seven this season), and is really silky, whether it’s a snap or set shot he doesn’t often miss.”

Sherwood, Brett McEvoy:Dylan Nelson would be our most accurate. Dylan’s come over from Perth, and he has kicked over 100 WAFL goals. He was playing in lower leagues his last couple of years in WA, but he’s the most accurate, beautiful kick of the footy.”

Surfers Paradise, Matt Lappin: “The general Mitch Patten is a deadeye, he’s really strong, reads the game well, knows how to finish goals, and doesn’t need too many chances to hurt the opposition. He’s hitting the scoreboard every week and has been consistent amid lots of unavailabilities. Harrsion Fraser is our captain and likes to think he’s a good kick for goal. I’d be pretty comfortable if he was kicking after the siren.”

Wilston Grange, Brent Moloney: “I’d have to say Lachie Rhook. He kicked something like 16 goals in the first six rounds before making his VFL debut earlier this month. It’s a well deserved opportunity for him.”

Mt Gravatt, Hamish Mitchell: “We’re not a team that scores heavily but Heath Seadon. He missed the first few rounds, played three and four and kicked four goals.”

Palm Beach Currumbin, David Armitage:Cory Beaman, he kicked 6.0 round one, two or three in round two, and six again in round three. He was quieter in round four but passed a few off.”

QAFLW

Aspley Hornets, Luke Glacken: “Would have to be Jess Stallard. She would almost tell me off if I didn’t put her name forward. She’s spent a lot of time getting her routine set and has taken a big step forward in her career this season.”

Bond University, Andy Lovell:Arianna Clarke, she’s a deadeye in front of goal but now that I’ve said that she’ll probably miss some.”

Coorparoo Kings, Rory Lake:Jenae Govan and Chelsea Chesterfield if you had to pick a couple to kick when the game’s on the line.”

Maroochydore, Paul Magher: “When she gets an opportunity, Chelsea Gillard rarely misses. She played up forward in round three and kicked four.”

UQ, Ross Clayfield:Harriet Knijff is another younger player, she was in the Lions Academy last year but got cut. She’s tough in the contest but people underestimate her kicking. She’s a powerful kick and if she gets a sniff she puts it through.”

Wilston Grange, Phil Tonkin: “That would be Lauren Shackleton at full forward. She’s taken her opportunity this year to cement her spot up top and has a great set shot. She takes her time and is very thoughtful with her routine and process.”

Yeronga, Stuart MacKay: “That would probably be Courtney McDonnell in that regard. She’s got a great snap kick but can also put away opportunities with her set shot which always helps.”

Southport Sharks, Peter Doherty: Was unavailable for comment prior to the time of publishing.
