Brisbane State High School have fought off a memorable performance from King’s Christian College guard Jaya Lowe to claim the gold medal at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

State High went into the game as heavy favourites and played that way in the first quarter as they limited their Gold Coast opponents to just three points in the opening 10 minutes to lead by 15 at the first break.

Sharni Reisinger and Prasayus Notoa did the same he early on for State High, getting into the paint at will and causing problems for the King’s zone defence.

But the second quarter was a different story as King’s were able to stall State High’s offence but they were still unable to find their form offensively with star duo Jaya Lowe and Rica Chanel Enriquez-Paea struggling to repeat their efforts from the semi-final as their team still trailed by 15 heading into halftime.

However, after the main break it was the Jaya Lowe show as the guard completely took over the game scoring 27 of her 33 points in the second half to get her team back in the game.

Lowe did it all, hitting from the perimeter and attacking the basket with aggression and State High’s defence had no answers as King’s closed the gap to as little as five points late in the fourth quarter.

But some key plays in the fourth from Notoa, Reisinger and Alleah Hanson allowed State High to overcome the fierce fight back from King’s and finish with a six-point victory and a state championship.

Lowe was the game’s leading scorer while Reisinger led the way for State High with 14 points while Notoa and Hanson had 11 each.

A buzzer beater from star Queensland guard Lebron Brooks has helped Brisbane Grammar win the Boys Junior state championship after a nail biting two-point victory over powerhouses Brisbane State High School.

Grammar started the game slowly as State High’s Roman Siulepa, who had averaged more than 40 points per game for the tournament, as well as sharpshooter Cody Rogers got off to a flyer on the offensive end as they held a 20-13 lead at the first break.

Siulepa did his damage in transition while Rogers connected on three made three-pointers to carry the scoring load for State High.

But Grammar answered in the second quarter with Brooks and big man Rocco Zikarsky answering the call and responding to State High’s first quarter.

Brooks could not be stopped in middle pick and roll

Situations for Grammar while Zikarsky proved unstoppable from the post and on the offensive rebounds.

However it was Grammar’s execution defensively which was most impressive, consistently sending multiple bodies at Siulepa to limit his impact for the second and third quarters as the team’s went into the final quarter level.

Another Queensland representative guard in Cletz Amos came alive for State High in the fourth as well as teammate Jayln Stanton as the pair carried the load while Grammar did a job on Siulepa defensively.

Both teams matched each other basket for basket late in the fourth but a crucial turnover with just four seconds left from State High gave Grammar the chance to win the game with scores at 67-67.

And Brooks made the most of it, finding his way to the middle of the keyway for a midrange jump shot that he knocked down with ease and handed Grammar the championship.

Zikarsky was the leading scorer for Grammar with 26 points while Brooks had 23.

Siulepa still had 21 despite Grammar’s efforts to keep

Him quiet and he was supported by Amos with 16 and Rogers with 13.
