The competition was on fire at Basketball Queensland’s Junior Secondary CBSQ tournament as teams played for finals spots on day two of competition at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

Day two of the tournament, which also featured games at the Cornubia Park Sports Centre and Runaway Bay Indoor Stadium, had several key match-ups with none bigger than the Girls Junior Division 1 clash between the Moreton Bay College and Brisbane State High School.

Somerset College remain undefeated and will take out top spot in the Boys Sophomore Division 2 competition after a hardfought victory over St Columban’s College to tip-off day two of action at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

After winning both games on the first day of the tournament, Somerset College had their work cut out for them against the Caboolture-based school, who pushed the undefeated side all the way.

However, it was Elijah Hill who continued his impressive form from day one, scoring 19 points to be the game’s leading scorer and help his team record an six-point victory and make it three wins from three games.

Kaden Gray built on his earlier performances for St Columban’s with 12 points to lead his team.

Corinda State High School have fought off Brisbane Grammar in a nailbiting contest to record their first win of the tournament early on day two.

In a low scoring match-up, where both teams struggled on the offensive end, it was Nhial Magot’s 16 points which allowed Corinda to build a slender lead and maintain it until the final siren.

Marcus Forbes led the scoring for Brisbane Grammar with seven points.

Citipointe Christian College have claimed top spot in Pool D of the Boys Junior Division 1 tournament after a hardfought three-point win over Ignatius Park College.

In a battle of the undefeated teams in the pool, Citipointe were able to make the crucial plays in the fourth quarter to earn a massive win for the school from Brisbane’s south over the Townsville powerhouse.

Cody Finlay was dominant for Citipointe with 28 points while he was supported by teammate Chayse Kristofer with 17 points.

Kynan McMahon led the way for Ignatius Park with 28 points.

Four players have scored in double figures as the Varsity College Vipers have sealed their spot at the top of Pool B in the Boys Junior Division 1 tournament with a 73-point win Marsden over Marsden State High School.

Varsity are now undefeated after three games and seemed to improve even more early on day two, putting Marsden to the sword from the first quarter and never letting up for the entire 40 minutes.

Alec Webb led the scoring for Varsity with 20 points while Marley Green (18 points), Sebastian Angara (12 points) and Zai Millane (11 points) all making significant contributions on the offensive end.

Both teams have their final pool game this afternoon.

King’s Christian College have continued with their red hot form in the Girls Division 1 tournament, fighting off a tough Marsden State High School team to record a 38-31 win and start the competition with three straight victories.

The Gold Coast side came into the game looking to seal top spot while Marsden looked to rebound from their first loss yesterday afternoon but it was King’s, who held strong to win the low scoring match-up.

Jaya Lowe was impressive for King’s and was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points while Alexis Beasley had 11 for Marsden.

Brisbane State High School have won the battle of the powerhouse teams in the Girls Junior Division 1 tournament after a 58-40 victory over Moreton Bay College this morning.

Both teams came into the match undefeated with a win meaning top spot in Pool A heading into the crossovers.

With MBC and State High featuring a lot of Queensland’s top young stars and also athletes who suited up for their respective schools in the Open CBSQ tournament, it was State High who turned the tables on their opponents after losing the bronze medal match at the senior competition last month.

Despite being a tough battle for most of the match, State High ended up running away with a convincing 18-point win.

Three players scored in double figures for State High led by Prasayus Notoa with 15 points, followed by Julia Klein with 11 and Sharni Reisinger with 10.

Vahayliah Seumanutafa was the leading scorer for MBC with 25 points.

Alexandra Hills State High School has sealed top spot in their pool in the Boys Junior Division 2 tournament after a convincing 69-42 win over North Lakes State School in their final round robin match.

The 27-point victory means Alex Hills finished the pool stages undefeated after four wins in the past two days.

Zane Macrae (20 points) and teammate Detroit Kingi (17 points) were clocking on all cylinders on the offensive end, almost outsourcing their opponents between them.

Ethan Aurisch led the scoring for North Lakes with 15 points.

Citipointe Christian College have booked their spot in the Boys Sophomore Division 2 semi-finals after a six-point victory over Runcorn State High School in the first quarterfinal.

The nerves of a do-or-die situation seemed to have an impact on both teams as neither side could find their touch on the offensive end in a match with just 46 points between the two outfits.

But it was Citipointe’s strong defence which proved tougher to crack for Runcorn as the Carindale-based school moved just two wins away from a state championship.

Citipointe had multiple contributors on the offensive end without anyone reaching double figures while Abdulrazzaq Hasan scored 10 for Runcorn.

Citipointe will face Somerset College in the grand final qualifier.

Sheldon College have bounced back from a disappointing first day to record their first win of the tournament, beating St Laurence’s College 65-58 in Pool D of the Boys Junior Division 2 tournament.

The Redlands-based school went winless on day one, recording one draw and a loss, while St Laurence’s split their games on Thursday and Sheldon definitely came out with more desperation to claim the seven-point victory.

Brodie Blaser led the scoring for Sheldon with 19 points while Noah Bevis also had 16 for the victors.

Tomas Koko top scored for Lauries with 15 points.

Another impressive performance from Elijah Hill has helped Somerset College to a dominant win over Calamvale Community College in the Boys Sophomore Division 2 quarterfinal.

While Hill scored 17 of Somerset’s 39 points, his team’s defence was also improved, keeping their opponents to just 19 points for the game.

James Hartley’s two big three-pointers also made a huge impact on the game as Somerset move on to the semi-final, where they will face Citipointe Christian College at 12.30pm Saturday.

Toowoomba Grammar have bounced back from their only loss of the Boys Junior Division 1 tournament to record a 61-50 win over Villanova College to keep their chances of playing quarterfinals basketball alive.

After being beaten by Cairns State High early on day two, Toowoomba needed a win to stay in the hunt for a top two finish in their pool and they did exactly that, fighting off a tough Villanova side.

The result makes it a three-way tie for the top two places in their pool after Cairns fell to King’s Christian College.

Which teams will move on to the quarterfinals from Pool B in the Boys Junior Division 1 tournament is still up in the air after St James College beat the in form Varsity Vipers 73-71 in their final round robin game.

In what was one of the games of the tournament so far, St James were able to hold steady and record their second victory of the week so far.

The result puts four teams in the pool on two wins and two losses with head to head points differential set to determine who will move on.

King’s Christian College look destined to take second spot in Pool B of the Girls Junior Division 2 tournament after a dominant 57-25 victory over Northside Christian College.

The win is the fourth straight for the Gold Coast school, who are still undefeated and have set up a blockbuster final pool game against All Hallows’ on day three at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

Tomorrow’s final round robin game will determine who claims first and second heading into the competition’s semifinals.

Queensland young star Hillary Fuller’s impressive tournament has continued after leading All Hallows’ School to an 80-49 demolition of the Varsity Vipers in the Girls Junior Division 1 tournament.

The state representative forward connected on 11 field goals to top score for her team, who remain undefeated after four games in Pool B.

The result seals top spot in the pool for All Hallows’, meaning a favourable match-up for the team heading into the quarterfinals.
