Quarters, semis contested on day three of Basketball Qld Junior Secondary CBSQ tournament (CBSQ 2022 )

Teams can take one step closer towards a state championship as the state’s best school teams contest the Basketball Queensland Junior Secondary CBSQ quarters and semi-finals on day three of the tournament on the Gold Coast.

The day will tip-off with the final pool games in the Boys Sophomore and Girls Junior divisions before it becomes do-or-die in the tournament’s crossover stages.

Boys Junior Division 1 quarterfinals will then take centre stage before Boys Sophomore Division 1 and 2 semi-finals with the Girls and Boys Junior Division 1 semi-finals being played later in the day.

Boys Sophomore Div 1 - Southport SHS def Marsden SHS 58-51

Southport State High School have finished their pool games on a high following a hardfought seven-point win over Marsden State High School to tip-off day three of the Basketball Queensland Junior Secondary CBSQ tournament.

With both teams out of contention to make the semi-finals, a favourable crossover match up was still on the line and it was the Gold Coast school, who came out on top to set up a clash with local rivals, Varsity this afternoon.

Dahtanian Okesene was impressive for Southport with 22 points while teammate Sam Scott also contributed 21 points.

Godfrey Onoka led the scoring for Marsden with 11.

Girls Junior Div 1 - Marsden SHS def Northside Christian College 50-32

Marsden’s dynamic duo of Alexis Beasley and Malaya Conboy have combined for 29 points to lead their team to an 18-point win over Northside Christian College to end the pool stages with a victory.

Conboy (17 points) and Beasley (12 points) have starred all tournament for the Logan school as they sealed third spot in Pool B with two wins and two losses.

Tia McDade was the leading scorer for Northside with 17 points.

Girls Junior Div 1 - Hillcrest Christian College def PBC 60-31

A 30-point performance from star guard Jessica Smith has helped her Hillcrest Christian College team record a convincing win over local rivals, Palm Beach Currumbin in their final pool game.

Smith, a Queensland state representative, connected on five three-pointers to almost outscore her opponents as Hillcrest rebounded from two earlier losses in the round robin stages to finish third in the pool.

Hillcrest will still miss out on a semi-finals spot despite the result with Brisbane State High and Moreton Bay College to progress from Pool B.

Eliza Rogers also had an impressive game for Hillcrest with 14 points while Cyra Iliuk led the scoring for PBC with 13 points.

Boys Junior Div 1 QF - Brisbane SHS def King’s Christian College 67-50

Brisbane State High School have fought off a tough King’s Christian College outfit to win their quarterfinal match-up and move on to this afternoon’s semi-finals.

State High were in control for most of the game before King’s launched a fightback towards the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to close to within two points at one stage in the final period.

But Roman Siulepa continued to show why he is arguably the best player at the tournament, responding with several big plays on his way to 37 points to lead his team to a 17-point win and put State High within two wins of a state championship.

Makai Green also had an impressive game for State High with eight points but several big defensive plays while Sione Ta’Ufo’Ou and Mitchell Reece led the scoring for King’s with 12 each.

Boys Junior Div 1 QF - Toowoomba Grammar def Good Shepherd 66-58

Three players have scored in double figures to lead Toowoomba Grammar to a quarterfinal victory over the Sunshine Coast’s Good Shepherd Lutheran College.

Toowoomba have had an impressive tournament so far and now will take on Brisbane Grammar for a spot in the championship game despite having to battle Good Shepherd for the full 40 minutes to progress in the competition.

Aidan Walker led the scoring for Toowoomba with 16 points while Tawana Ngorima (15 points) and Samuel Geu (13 points) also made significant contributions.

Liam Switzer was the top scorer for Good Shepherd with 16 points, Cooper Delaney had 14 and Samuel Barnes had 10.

Boys Sophomore Div 2 - Somerset College def Citipointe Christian College 37-29

Somerset College are just 40 minutes away from a state championship after overcoming a brave Citipointe Christian College in the Boys Sophomore Division 2 semi-final.

In a low scoring contest, it was the undefeated Somerset who made more crucial plays and fought off an impressive 19 points from Shao Joshua to finish with an eight-point victory and move on to the grand final.

Elijah Hill led the scoring for Somerset with 11 points while Declan partridge had 10.

Boys Sophomore Div 2 - Mansfield SHS v Redlands College 55-16

Callum Langton has put in 15 points to help his Mansfield State High School team run away with a convincing 37-point victory over Redlands College.

Mansfield jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back as Langton carried the load offensively as the school from Brisbane’s south now moves on to play for fifth position against Runcorn State High School on the final day of the tournament tomorrow.

Boys Sophomore Div 1 SF - Trinity College, Beenleigh def Brisbane SHS 65-58

Trinity College, Beenleigh have upset Brisbane State High School to knock out one of the favourites for the state title and progress to Sunday’s all important championship game.

State High led for most of the first three quarters, but they struggled to pull away from the Logan-based school, who stood tough and kept themselves in the game with some big plays on both ends of the floor.

Then in the fourth quarter, it was all Trinity College, as they completely flipped the game on its head, going on a massive run and keeping a hold on State High’s offence.

Late in the game State High couldn’t find the answers for a tough Trinity outfit, who ran away with a seven-point victory and book their spot in the grand final, where they will face Toowoomba Grammar.

Geoffrey Peterson continued his impressive tournament for Trinity with 22 points while teammates Adam Bencsik had 15 and Conner Gilbert had 14.

For State High, Stefan Stefanov led the scoring with 16 points and Eli Murray had 10 points.

Boys Sophomore Div 1 - Southport SHS def Varsity College 50-35

An offensive clinic from Southport’s Sam Scott has taken his team to an easy 15-point victory over Gold Coast rivals, the Varsity College Vipers in the Boys Sophomore Division 1 crossover.

Scott connected on 13 made field goals and two free-throws for a total of 27 points as Southport booked a spot in the fifth and sixth playoff on Sunday.

Luca Sacco led the scoring for Varsity with 10 points.

Girls Junior Div 1 SF - Brisbane SHS def All Hallows’ School 70-49

Brisbane State High School have dominated All Hallows’ in the semi-final to remain undefeated and book their spot in Sunday’s championship game.

State High were able to get out to a slender lead early on in the grand final qualifier with Harmony Seumanutafa finding her touch early on the offensive end to kickstart her team’s hopes of moving on in the tournament.

Hilary Fuller (21 points) and Matilda White (10 points) tried to keep All Hallows’ in the game but State High reached another level in the second half, extending their lead to double digits as Sharni Reisinger and Prasayus Notoa started to get going.

State High’s lead continued to build throughout the second half and unfortunately All Hallows’ couldn’t find their way back as the ended up with a 21-point loss.

Reisinger led the scoring for State High with 20 points while Seumanutafa had 12 and Notoa recorded 10.

State High will face King’s Christian College in Sunday’s grand final.

Girls Junior Div 1 SF - King’s Christian College def Moreton Bay College 69-57

Rica Chanel Enriquez-Paea and Jaya Lowe have combined for 54 points to lead King’s Christian College to a 12-point victory over Moreton Bay College to claim a spot in the grand final.

The Gold Coast side’s duo were able to outscore the three-headed monster from MBC in Vahayliah Seumanutafa, Hariett Baker and Alice Dart by nine points (54-45), which was ultimately the deciding factor to allow King’s to book a place in the championship game in front of a home crowd.

Enriquez-Paea was the game’s leading scorer with 29 points while Lowe had 25.

Dart was Moreton Bay’s top scorer with 17 and the team from Brisbane’s bayside also received significant contributions from Seumanutafa (16 points) and Baker (12 points).

Boys Junior Div 1 SF - Dakabin SHS def Brisbane SHS 74-66

Brisbane State High School duo Roman Siulepa and Cletz Amos have starred in the Boys Junior Division 1 semi-final to fight off a tough Dakabin State High School team and earn a spot in Sunday’s championship game.

Siulepa (41 points) and Amos (22 points) combined for 63 of their side’s 74 points to seal the victory, which means both State High’s girls and boys teams will feature in the Junior Division 1 grand finals.

But State High didn’t have it all their way as Dakabin, whose basketball program has been on the rise in recent years, continued to push and battle their way into the game.

Julius Wardzinski was impressive for Dakabin with 21 points while teammates Sean Norman (13 points) and Leeroy Watson (10 points) also performed well in the semis.

The result means a showdown between two of the championship favourites in Sunday’s grand final with State High to take on Brisbane Grammar.

Boys Junior Div 1 SF - Toowoomba Grammar School def Brisbane Grammar School 67-46

Brisbane Grammar have put together arguably their best performance of the tournament so far to convincingly beat Toowoomba Grammar by 21 points to progress to the grand final.

Big man Rocco Zikarsky’s 21 points and Lebron Brooks’ 16 points helped Brisbane to keep the scoreboard clicking over but it was their ability to limit Toowoomba’s James Nugent and Samuel Geu, which allowed the Daniel George-coached team to run away with the result.

The win means it will be a battle of the teams filled with state representatives in the championship game with Zikarsky and Brooks leading Brisbane Grammar while Roman Siulepa and Cletz Amos will lead Brisbane State High.
