Walters Cup semifinals live stream: Palm Beach Currumbin v Marsden and Keebra Park v Wavell

Palm Beach Currumbin got the job done, but there was a nervy moment or two, before Wavell joined them in the grand final after a final five minutes that had a bit of everything. Relive the action.

Wavell SHS prop Jordan Easthope scored the match-winning try against Keebra Park SHS to punch his team’s ticket to a Walters Cup grand final clash against Palm Beach Currumbin SHS.

Wavell were down 10-8 when elusive halfback Timahna Tandy softened up the defence for the pile-diving Easthope, whose power and body height saw him crash in over his defenders.

The heroic Easthope captured his side’s first lead of the contest and victory all in one.

Keebra had three minutes to pounce but could not find a way through Wavell’s determined defence, which was unbreakable in an inspired second half effort.

They were down 10-0 at the break after fullback David Bryenton, along with crushing forwards Zephaniah Takitaki and Kallen Boss impressed early.

Bryenton was elite with his side-stepping, as was second rower Kalani Patu with his tackles - but Wavell weathered the storm and rallied late to steal victory.

It was a gutsy team effort to overcome the daunting defence of Keebra and sparking their comeback was the evasive Tavita Tima.

The centre scored his team’s first and once he landed one, Wavell were full of confidence.

PBC STRIKE EARLY TO REACH GRAND FINAL

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS’s opening 10-minute surge was enough to separate them from Marsden SHS as they grabbed a place in the Walters Cup grand final with a 20-6 victory.

PBC SHS led 14-0 after 12 minutes before Marsden SHS defended their way back into the match. But the damage had been done.

Impressive PBC SHS fullback Dylan Patterson then scored a brilliant individual try 50 seconds from the end, expanding their team’s margin.

But it was a competitive semifinal. Down 14-6 with 10 minutes remaining, Marsden SHS bombed a certain try, and from the turnover PBC SHS centre Hudson Pratt tore through the ruck and the chance was lost.

PBC SHS went to have their oranges leading 14-0, an advantage set up in the opening 12 minutes when they dominated possession.

Did Marsden SHS touch the ball in the opening stanza? Very briefly, and to PBC SHS’s credit they took full advantage of the possession flow to establish what could have been a match winning advantage.

Marsden had to be the first score in the second half, and they were when centre Reece Gorman bravely took PBC edge forward giant Nelson Makaafi head on, leading to a change in possession.

It was in that set of six that Marsden applied enough pressure to send Tamai Whakatau on his way to scoring. Marsden were down 14-6 and it was game on.

Earlier, in the opening minutes, massive prop. Malakai Mosaati was just too big, too strong close to the line to score, while Patterson was at his athletic best to catch a Harrison Doherty cross kick and score. Doherty brought his kicking boots as well.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Keebra Park SHS

David Bryenton

He is not a big man, but has great balance, is quick and has a great step.

Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security if he under plays his hand in the first half. He can finish games like a Ferrari.

Jai Bilish

A tough little fella, Bilish has been outstanding. He even managed a Langer Trophy debut, when Ryder Williams was unavailable, he was not out of place.

He takes the ball to the line and can threaten with his own running or passing.

Francis Pepeto

The pink headgear-wearing hooker brings his forwards onto the ball, but when he goes to the ruck near the line, opponents need to be on red alert for his own attack on the tryline.

Marsden SHS

Mace Andrew

Off the back of a Langer Trophy quarterfinal debut appearance, back rower or middle forward Andrew is set for a big match in the semifinals. Signed by South Sydney, the mobile forward has a big motor.

Marsden SHS lock Tupou Francis has been signed by the Broncos.

Tupou Francis

Don’t be fooled by his fresh mullet, he is the heart beat of his team. A hardworking No. 13 both on and off the ball. He will set a high standard in the opening exchanges. The Broncos have signed Francis.

Tayshaarn Tonga

The crafty hooker has been in great form during the second half of the season. Signed by the Dolphins, he punches above his weight in defence and constantly asks questions of the opposition with the ball.

Wavell SHS

Sangstar Figota

There is an X-factor about Figota, a long-striding fullback who can explode down the middle, or join the fray out wide. A junior from Marist Saints in New Zealand, Figota has been signed by the Roosters.

Azariah Toki-Matauri

Toki-Matauri is a great leader and competitor with plenty of skills and a high work ethic. He can play five-eight or No. 13 and is one of those tough little roosters who can also spark attack with his own individual flair. He is a ball of energy.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS

Nelson Makaafi

The representative edge forward is PBC’s prime mover. He is a big body, and is also persistent. Teams have to be ready in the first and 60th minute because he will come at them with the same intensity.

Marley McLaren

The livewire talent from the Northern Rivers of NSW, McLaren is a terrific halfback general who can run a team with ease. The Brisbane Broncos-signed rookie also has some nice individual flair.

Archie Sillar

Sillar will be a scheming dummy half who takes every opportunity he is given.

Dylan Patterson

Yet another electric fullback in the PBC system. He is fast, agile and regularly beats the first defender.
